I just bought a Speedster and it turns out to be a 1997 SPMC. Can anybody shed some light on this a tell me what it is I've bought

SPCN or SPMC (and a few others) is just a designation by the BMV for a Special Cunstructed/Specialty Construction/Small Manufacture Vehicle/Assembled Vehicle. Designations vary by state.
1997 would be the "year of manufacture" or the year it was assembled by the owner, or first titled.
As Alan said above, off you post large and more detailed photos, especially of the areas he mentions, the forum will identify the origin (most likely CMC/Fiberfab/VS?)
Not sure what is happening with your photos but they are only the size of postage stamps when the viewer opens them. Make sure the format size on your camera settings is set to "large" and/or the pixel size is set to the highest setting. Also when you add them to the website choose the large size option.
Hard to see detail in small photo. Not digging the TR-3 looking rear engine deck lid hinges but they could be easily changed for the hidden replica speedster hinges (http://vintagespeedsterparts.com). You definitely have a unique ride in your part of the world.
It's like looking through the wrong end of a telescope. Is it a 66 bug?
I don't like those hinges either. The pictures are lifted off ebay so I'll have to wait till it gets to New Zealand to take some better shots. Until then that's all I've got to drool over.
Hopefully it's already in New Zealand/Australia? Aussie here recently got snuffed by customs from importing a 1985 CMC from US.
No it's not here yet. I did get the guy to do a jack test on it before I bought it. I'm going to convert to right hand drive as well so that should keep them happy.
