Yup; it's definitely a Speedster!
The force is strong with you.
As long as you appreciate the knowledge and wisdom I give...
First guess would NOT be a CMC kit, since I don't think they ever put in the holes/caps in the body for the torsion bars just ahead of the rear wheels.
Beyond that, I'm drawing a blank.
Of course. I've never owned a VW or a Porsche so I know about Zero. The learning curve will be steep.
Curious is the engine grille one piece cast aluminum? CMC/FF (FiberFab) and early IM used that. The rear torsion bar access could be added by PO with a hole saw but VS/JPS(?) add them. No cast rear hood hinges so no help. If front hood has cast hinges - do they have INTERMECCANICA in raised letters? Any evidence of gold 2x2" CMC build plate riveted anywhere? Or silver IM build sticker in right door opening? Any emblem on hood handle or steering wheel center horn button? Early IMs used 914 VDO gauges with large tach - but easy to add to any. Donating member can view/download a FF/CMC build manual which might help id other items.
In New Zealand guess it could be anything. I don't think in even matters in New Zealand - it's got to be one of just a handful in the country. The final grey with red is sharp!
Cheers, It's defiantly not a IM. The hood handle is new and there is nothing on the body. The only reason I'm asking is so I can source a windshield.
I am disappointed, Don; you haven't asked the right question...
I didn't ask a question. That was a closed statement. How about this? Does the cutout in the door give any indication as to origin? The car is still in the US. The torsion bar hole seems to be a clue. Yes or no I'm not sure as to being a CMC.
Now you're closer to asking the right question, and what I can tell you is this-
I don't know (I told you all I knew when I said it was a Speedster!)
Excellent. Your in the same camp as me when it comes to speedsters then.
Pretty much. I can help you with the mechanical/high performance end of it, though.
As @Former Member says.... Ummm I am new here but....
My 2 cents. If it is still in the US, can we ask where? Maybe someone knows the car or is close to it to go look at it for you. With that, I am with Al, it is a Replica Speedster for sure.
Stephen
The fact that it's in US does give a little more info. VS likes to take the red wire to the alternator and roll it around a pencil so it looks like a curly-queue. Easily replicated though. VS does sell "rollers" (unfinished cars) though. On the dash VS uses a horizontal chrome strip --- the others use a vinyl covered raised rubber 2" wide dash band.
Here's VS dash and interior -
"The only reason I'm asking is so I can source a windshield."
I'm lost here. Are you saying you want that car identified so you can buy a windshield such as the one that is on it? Or you want to buy a regular Speedster windshield?
Or, are you saying the car above is your car and you need a new windshield for it?
What exactly is it that you want?
That's my car and it's on it's way from Arkansas to New Zealand. That lexan windshield that's on it has got to go so I'm trying to get a regular Speedster windshield. My dash has nothing on it at all to tell me anything.

Speedster windshield package from either Special Edition or Vintage Speedsters will fit but be sure to buy all components from the same source as their are minor differences in the hardware that don't match others.
Special Edition. Never heard of them.
Don, special edition is Beck Speedster.
Are you mating the windshield up to ship it at same time? Do you have all the windshield pieces - L&R end posts, bottom alum track, upper frame, and rubber mouldings? A SE/Beck windshield is used by many with FF/CMC and early IMs. They list entire package on ebay for $648 and the glass for an added $269. Add rear view mirror, clamp and roof header clamps also available from them. Plus Shipping from Bremmen, IN.

I suspect VS not far from LA would fit too - http://www.vintagespeedsters.c...category/windshield/
Another untrusted source is - http://vintagespeedsterparts.com/glassandmirror.aspx
Shame you don't know all parts need so they could all ship together. Suspect separate shipping to NZ is costly.
Don,
I've built resto'd 42 speedsters and from the plexi photo, it looks like you'll need everything posts, upper and lower frame w/ rubbers, glass and mirror rod. As mentioned you need to source it all from one seller as parts are not interchangeable..... slight differences in the hardware etc.
Vintage Speedsters, Special Edition ( Beck) or Intermeccanica all listed in the SOC .. I have a correct template to help you position the post holes in the right location and save alot of time ~Alan
Ya, Your right I need the entire kit and glass and that mounting template would be much appreciated. The car is heading to LA for shipment so I've sent VS a email. There just down the road from the shipping company so I'm hoping they'll package it up and it'll just go in the passenger seat for shipment.
Private msg me with an address and I will get a template set out to you....ASAP
Other parts from VS that fit -
Top? add Haartz top, header with clips, top bows, tension clips and tonneau, side curtains
Interior? add seats, dash, door panels, carpets (with some finagling), heater and defroster vents, shifter and brake boots
Lights, emblems, bumpers/nerf bar and brackets?
Don- When you get the car can you post pics of the windshield (and how it's fastened)- I'd like to know how it was done. I don't know if I'll ever do anything like it; I'm just interested... Al
Hey Don, If VS is close to were the car is in California why don't you have VS install the windshield at their shop! If you still decide to do it yourself I'll sent you the template
It's very scary installing the windshield - especially knowing replacement glass is hard to come by in NZ. One screw too long or a windshield post too tight and - crrraaack!
It would be nice to get VS to do the install. However the install of the lexan has been a butchery job as a slot was cut into the cowl and the lexan slotted in. So I need to do repairs and the car is in the box now and awaiting the boat. I'll also get two screens when the time comes. I can fit the screen myself. I love those tuff jobs. Alan could you scan the template and email it and I'll blow it up to the right size
By the way. Thanks gentleman.
