911's are also on the left side. Couple of theories of thought. First is the grand-prix start idea. Second is that the fuse panel and battery are on the left side of a 911 (notwithstanding dual battery cars but the fuse panel is still on the left) so placement on the left is a slightly shorter wiring run. Less wire, less weight.

Not sure where the battery/fuse panel is on a 356. Maybe it was the same idea.

That's a great question. I never liked it that my '55 Coupe had the key on the left. All of the 356 coupes from the Pre-A to the last of them had the key on the left as did the convertibles and cabrios. The Speedsters of the same vintage had the key to the right, of course.

Maybe an American concession since the Speedsters were aimed at the US in particular. In a racing car there's a need for consolidation and brevity of effort so the key, started, fuel pumps and such would be in a single area. With the dedicated factory racers, the key would be replaced by the ignition toggle later on I guess.

It's VERY uncomfortable thinking that some little brat is gonna reach into the Porsche at a stop light, yoink the ignition key (conveniently within reach of the side window) and dixie with it.

Still, a neat question for sure ! !
