I have to replace the ignition switch (with keys) in a 2000 VS. I guess I can get it from Kirk, but do you know of any other (online) shops (..it would be great, if someone even has a part#) ?

I got my NOS Bosch ignition switch from www.Klasse356.com complete with the correct Chrome bezel for about $80

I use a toggle switch ignition - $6. A push button is about the same - for something a little different.

but what ignition switch can you buy that will receive an original porsche key?

If you really want a genuine Porsche ign. switch, you have to hit The Samba site. They have EVERYTHING and prices are great.

At lot of time you'll find that the earlier Porsches, while not using Beetle parts, used early Bus parts instead. OR the Bus parts are so close as to be indistinquishable from original. Beetle parts always look Beetle, just look at the light and wiper knobs!
I have a barndoor bus ign. switch in my car and it's pretty much dead on. It also looks the part, old and german and different from what you find at AutoMall or the boat yard supply houses.
Even the chrome has a warm yellow cast to it, and the key is all weird looking.
They have a very good search engine as well.
