Pat, there are some good books listed which you will discover using the "library" tab on this website. As far as books about builders, by which I assume you mean replica builders, I don't know of any. Kit Car Builders magazine has been giving 356's and their makers increasing coverage over the past year, especially since Knotts and Carlisle last spring. I expect more of the same.

BTW, don't appologize for being new or asking questions. That's what we're here for.
Pat,

The Pegusus is the symbol of Mobil Oil and evidently in the 50's was a sponser of some 356's in one form or another, They stuck their symbol,(Pegusus) on the car to reflect their sponsorship. It looked pretty cool, not the large script a lot of the sponser used. Anyway, it has caught on, or rather been renewed lately. I was going to get one for my speedy but so many people are sticking them on their car I have been thinking about the Sinclair Oil dinasaur. Anybody know where I could locate a puke green Dino?

Yeah, next you'll be looking for "Mister Natural" and "Keep on Truckin" stickers and wearing a "Stoker" hat.....or maybe some of those big vinyl daiseys from the '60's.

It's a little harder getting period racing memerobilia for "Porsche" or knock-off cars. Somehow "Abarth" stickers look a little out of place, as do "Cooper Tires".

Castrol was always good, and Sunoco, but both were unexciting. I brought back a bunch of ESSO Stickers from my Peace Corps-ish stint in Central America, saying "Pongo un Tigre en su Tanque!! (Put a tiger in your tank!), but they weren't widely used (I wonder why not?)

It might be cool to check out pictures of the old PanAmerican Race cars to see what they had for sponsor decals and see if we could find some of those. Duplicating the look of a PanAmerican Carerra would be a lot of fun!

Gordon,

I've got an old Mexican Road race book from the early 50's that a friend gave me. Has lots of B & W pictures in it. I'll see what crops up, if anything looks good I'll scan it and shoot it to you. I think the old book was one of those Clymer softbound books published in the 50's when road racing was still in its infancy in the New World. My first job after the service was with Pure Oil Company. I worked in the records section and discovered several boxes of 8 X 11 glossy B & W photo's taken at various race tracks around the country. Pure at the time was the gas sponser at the Nascar and some sports car venues. Wish I had those photo's now. They were professional photo's with driver/car info taped on the back. Great lunch time browsing!

Good grief I just realized that was over 40 years ago, yikes!

Bruce
Gordon,

In passing, a lot of the old stock cars carried the Pure Oil Logo on the front fenders, in fact I remember some of the sports cars did also. it is a nice logo, round with a sunburst edge, blue and white. I've got an old enamal Pure Oil sign, about 14-15 in diameter. Bet I could get somebody out here to make a master from it and then some vinyl decals, whatcha think?

Bruce
No stupid questions here... I just went out and bought in the beginning and now i have rebuilt, retro-fitted and spent more on upgrades and decoratin' my car than what I bought the car for orignally!

Hey Bruce, I'm finding that vinyl and static cling are indeed two different animals. One supplier/graphics comapny was telling me the vinyl is no problem to remove, no surface damage, etc, but you can't reuse the decal.

They didn't have a static cling offering, but do have a 'vinyl light' product and she was shiopping me a sample. It was supposed to have good stick, but easily removed and perhaps with care, could be re-used.

The folks that advertise they do static cling are not very responsive I'm finding. I am open to suggestions.
P.
Paul,

The decals Leader had made up last year for Knotts were a vinyl type but they would have been difficult to reuse, stretching and tearing. They were fairly easy to remove and left no residue. The ones I am thinking about are the static cling I guess. Is there any interest here in having some Pure Oil static cling decals made? If so, then I can start some wheels in motion.

Gordon, still looking for that Clymer book, hope it didn't go in the movers Black Hole!

Bruce
