I'm jealous. Not only is it too hot and sticky here right now to do much outside, but there are no other Speedsters within 4-6 hours of me. Yes, I'd like some cheese with my whine.

There are three Spedsters and two Spyders in Beaufort, another Speedster in Lobeco and yet another two close to you, all within 2 hours of you. The Beaufort guys (and gals) are: Jody Henson, Gary Suback (Lady's Island) and Chris Huber (Dataw Island). Can't remember the names of the two ladies who own the Spyders, one is from Callawassie Island and is a real estate broker (black car, lipstick red interior).
Then there's a guy in Summerville - Al something, lives over on the Walterboro side and the other guy is over near you somewhere (cream white IM with camel interior and coco mats). The folks up your way I met at a cruise-in at Bessinger's on rt 17, and the rest were part of the Beaufort club or showed up at the Hilton Head Concours.
Got any contact info? I never EVER see another one.

It's not that hard, Lane. Keep it low-key, and everybody has more fun.
Pick some good roads. Put out the word. Regroup every 30 miles or so. Stop at places with good bar food along the way.

Come on up for the Telegraph Cruise tomorrow. If you drive all night, you just might make it ;-)
I agree with stan. Host it and they will come. Maybe you could broaden your horizons and hook up with the OTHER VW guys.

It’s doing fine, Stan and also gives me something to do while driving besides pick my nose. Watching the needles move back and forth is fun. Gauges would be more entertaining though.
Easy Peezy. Only 14 hrs, 15 minutes.

Sorry to be so late to the Party. Sue and I would definitely be interested in a fall drive! The later in the month the better; We are going to be gone the first 10 days of Sept.
I know most of the roads around Starved Rock etc. And a full days drive can be easily put together.

Looks like most of my kids games are Sundays which leaves Saturdays free. The only weekend that does not work at all is 9/20-22.
I'm still up for a possible drive to the flatlands...just depends on how the stars are aligned.

Starved Rock State Park is a pretty short-hop for the Chicago guys, and about an hour and a half for me and Bob as well. Chris lives in the park, subsisting on nuts and berries, so he can be our indian guide. It's still a bit of a haul for Rich, but I got a FB message today from Allan Shapiro, who now lives in central MO-- and is interested in joining us, so there's nobody's got a good excuse. Allan's not 100%, but is thinking hard about making an 8 hr drive to spend the day with us. I'm thinking of a Saturday in September-- let's say the 21st, if it works out for everybody. Joe is tied up on Sundays (as am I), and the 21st gives us a month or so to get our ducks in a row.
My thoughts were that we could perhaps meet at some central point (the park lodge parking lot?) mid-morning (say 10 or so). Chris had indicated that he knows the good roads, and could lay out some drives. I'm thinking we could get lunch somewhere, and start rolling. We could drive all afternoon, have a reasonably early dinner somewhere, and drive back to our respective corners to sleep in our own beds.
I'd really like to do this. I really like the area, but don't know it that well (even though we had one of our daughters get married in Ottawa). I hate to impose, but we'd have to rely pretty heavily on your knowledge of roads and restaurants, Chris.
If the date works for you gentlemen, and you are interested in coming-- please shoot me a reply with your thoughts on "the plan". I'm needing a top-down day in the car pretty badly, right about now.

A mere 175 miles away, 3 hours and 2 minutes the way the Googlebird flys.
With any luck I could make it home by Sunday's kickoff of the Packers game
OK; Sat. Sept 21st at 10:00 AM. We will all meet at the main Lodge Parking lot for Starved Rock State Park.
In my mind... I've already plotted out a decent West- East drive criss-crossing the Illinois River. I will refine this in the coming weeks. Lot's of interesting river towns and roads. Not a lot of traffic either. Most of this area is quit rural.
I'm thinking a Lunch Stop around 1PM... Probably a Bar & grille in Seneca, or Marseilles.
Another stop around 3:30 PM, around Peru or so?
And diner at 6-7:00 PM in Ottawa. Lot's of cool bar & grilles in Ottawa.
This will allow everyone to be back on the road for home early Sat. night??
Let me know your thoughts. Should be alot of Fun!

I guess I have excuses this time. Daughter is off to college, I retire from coaching the park district youth football program and the wife has not put anything on the calendar for that day. The only thing that could be the kill is a farmer digging up one of my pipelines. Time to wipe the cobwebs of the car.

I guess it's still kinda up in the air if this Sept. day trip is going to happen? Very few positive commitments. Either way, it was a pretty weekend here in Northern ILL and I did a bit of driving near and around the Fox river. The Fox river and the Illinois river join up in Ottawa and there are alot of cool roads and scenic stops.
