I am from and still live in upstate NY. I have been told that NY is NOT a part of the northeast. Whatever. And yes, I am a prick too!

Vince, can't wait to hoist a few in Carlisle!

BTW, my whole family are Yankees fans. For me, baseball is as exciting as watching golf, tennis, or the grass grow. Formula One is another story, but to each his own.
I'm def rethinking the 6 speed. This project has to come off smooth in the next 2 or 3 months to take advantage of the good weather. I can't be fabbin' up gears and moving motors forward. Nope that dream's over. Sounded good. Looked great on paper. Just like the all the other blondes' I've chased it's not gonna happen

I've decided to sell my rebuilt STi 6 speed/parts I've had sitting here for 3 years (hi dollar$$ item on the Subie sites..it will sell instantly for at least 2000 or more) and use that $ for a 5 speed + any money left over will go towards the conversion kit. RS gearboxes can be had for stupid money..100 bux. put 200 into synchros and bearings etc. Do the labor myself BAM..Save 1700 shemolians'$$$

Either way I'm not settling for a 4 speed...I drive on the freeway every day. There's great back roads but you have to use i80 to access them. Google CA HIGHWAY 20. It's 10 miles from me and a fantastic/fast windy country drive down to Nevada City. Vertical drop over 3500 ft. OR Google CA OLD' 40. It's 5 miles from me and hangs off a gorge for 5 miles or so down to DONNER LAKE. Fun and scary. Vertical drop 1100 in just 5 miles. Our local subie/evo crew used to do laps on it late at night. big fun

Plus I'm about 3 1/2 hours from Santa Cruz. There's more backroads there then I could explore in a lifetime. Between hi 17 and SF it's one massive jigsaw puzzle of driving heaven. Not to mention SKYLINE Blvd and the crazy popular ALICE'S RESTARAUNT scene every weekend. I'll need some taller gears for that excursion

First thing monday I'm calling Steve up and drill him on how he does the subie 5spd with his dcabs'. He does use Subie gearboxes right? I know he crams thos slush boxes in there for the base model Ha! who uses an auto for the standard model..strange. Probably gets them dirty cheap

Angela thanks for the welcome...and yes once this bugger is up and runnin' I'll def' hit up some meets. I'll have lost all my freinds/girlfreind by then so the new faces will be great

PS How do I get instant email updates on posts? I didn't see a link to any site setting besides my name and email
update on the 6 speed dream. It still could be a reality. Apparently it's possible..just as possible as a Subaru 5MT. As of 2010 Subaru is making a 6 speed version of the same 5MT. It's a LEGACY and Diesel boxer trans.

Same housing, similar ring and pinion as the 5 mt..as opposed to the STi 6 speed which is not an option.

2 totally different gearboxes

You can get the reverse gear set from Subagears

Finding a used one will be harder and more expensive..bout' 2 grand is the cheapest I've found online. It's a wide ratio box aimed at great EPA numbers. Perfect.

I'd pass on the wide ratio 6 speed. That's the last thing you need in this type of car on our speed regulated roads. Really don't need to go over 120 or so - the rest is BS bragging rights. What you want to do is GET to 120 faster than anyone else.

And Vince? See you in Pismo!

I don't see the value of the 6-speed vs. the 5-speed. With the 2007+ 5MT WRX, first gear is 3.454, fifth gear is .78 With all the Subi 6-speeds I know of, both fifth and sixth are overdrive gears. The 2007+ STI 6MT, fifth is .971, sixth is .756.

From my perspective, it's WAY too much money and fab time to get another overdrive gear. Cheaper and easier to change tire size. The fun is in the first 4 or 5 gears, not overdrive.
Moo sex(?),

Having lived 20 years in the Santa Cruz Mt's (and still owning my house there) I'd say that you'd do well to retain at least four close ratio lower gears for use in those explorations. Same but less so for the old gold miner roads. There are more roads than most maps indicate and 'local secret' routes to accomplish the commutes to either San Jose, Palo Alto, or San Francisco without doing more than a few freeway miles to any of them. My ideal 5sp would have only 5th an overdrive with the remainder giving better control of RPM in all the windy roads where it's rare to use direct driving fourth gear.

Anyway, have fun, and if you're not thinking about Subaru's newer Forrester 2.0 engine I won't understand. That one seems ideal - a little easier to fit in our cars, better fuel milage, and a high rev smooth sweetheart of an engine overall. I have a '98 Outback with just 50k on it and took a test in a new forrester. Less power but WHAT a great little motor they've produced!
