I am constantly getting very fine grit plugging up the jets in my Dells. I have a fuel filter before the pump, and one in front of each carb and the problem persists. I was going to have my tank boiled and sealed when a friend said "Hey, this ain't no Porsche. Just buy a new tank!" Wel he was correct. A new tank costs less than treating the old one HOWEVER it appears that the IM tank is modified. The fuel inlet is is on the passenger side on the top, and extends up about two inches. That is not stock. Has anyone tried putting a really old style tank wiht the cap about five inches in Diameter and fits right on the tank. The drawback is that there is no fuel guage for these tanks.
APpreciate any thoughts.

CIP1 has replacement tanks (Made in Brazil) with the in the trunk passenger's side filler --- you can even get a larger 15-16 gallon one. These also have the opening for the fuel level sender. Althought you may not need extra capavity the extra weight in front is desireable.

For std size $50:

For 16 gal $70:

Ralph, I may be wrong, but I'd think it was coming through your air filters. I had three gas filters in line before the carbs, and was still getting plugged idle jets until I replaced my stock air filters with real K&N filters about a year and a half ago. Guess what, no more clogged jets. Be sure to use the sealing grease they sell too. Just my take on the subject.

Guys!
I am always amazed at the great ideas. Another thing is that I can hear the electric pump struggling to fill up so it certainly indicates some sort of obstruction. Is there a fuel sock in the tank and how accessible is it without gas running down my arm into my pits making me a walking Molotof Cocktail. Another thing I pumped the gas into a clear glass p and am certain it is the in fuel line somewhere. The idea of the magnets just sounds great. I will try this PM. If so the magnets sound good.
The idea of a large tank has a lot of appeal. I stop really often to re-fuel.
Thanks again:
I magnetized screwdriver and particles stuck to it. Looked in tank and saw some small rust spots. Tank is removed.
Manual sez to treat with muriatic acid then neutralize and rinse.
Blow out and coat with some kind of liner. ANy recommendations for neutraizer beyond baking soda
and brand of coating agent.
Thanks
you're right about the "cream", a lot of motorcycle dealers/people will not sell/use
these products anymore due to epa, liabilities and health issues==bad stuff.
call you local radiator shop betcha they still do it. reasonable too. while you're
in there you can remove the in tank finger screen.
Talking about "The Cream"; did you know they're reuniting and playing 4 shows at the Albert hall in May (2nd, 3rd, 5th & 6th)? Of course they were sold out the first week. My God! The last time they played there was in 1968!! Is that cool or what? Of course, I'll have to wait for the DVD.
Oh my goodness. A couple of things I learned. If you are going to treat the tank yourself make sure all exposed threads are covered. I did not wind in the screws that hold in hte fuel gauge metering arm. Any way I had to chase the threads with a tap. ALso, I know this should be obvious, but mark the position of the fuel guage unit cover. It only goes in one way although it appears to go in more than a few.
