Sold for $72,356. That is incredible for a VW pan Intermeccanica International.
From the Ad
---------------------------------
This Intermeccanica roadster is a replica of a Porsche 356A Convertible D that is powered by a 2,110cc flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The car was built by Intermeccanica in British Columbia, Canada in 1985 using a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle pan, and it was reportedly refinished in 2015 in California, at which time the engine was replaced. The seller acquired the vehicle in 2017, and it was listed on BaT in February 2020 but the sale could not be completed after the auction concluded. Finished in blue over tan, the car features a tan soft top, air conditioning, a Nardi steering wheel, driving lights, a luggage rack, and four-wheel disc brakes. The shifter was adjusted and the oil was changed in mid-2020. This Intermeccanica is now offered with service records, manufacturer’s literature, a tonneau cover, luggage, and a clean California title in the seller’s name that describes the car as a 1969 Porsche.
The body reportedly has been refinished in Porsche Midnight Blue Metallic and is said to have been previously finished in Guards Red. Exterior features include a tan soft top, dual exhaust, a chrome luggage rack, front-bumper-mounted driving lights, and headlight stone guards. The driver-side quarter panel was reportedly refinished in 2019, and paint chips on the edge of the driver’s door are depicted in the photo gallery below. The soft top is shown raised and lowered, and the pictured luggage and straps accompany the car.
Chrome-finished 15″ slotted wheels wear Porsche-branded covers and are mounted with Nexen SB-802 tires measuring 165/80. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs said to have been installed in 2015 along with replacement shocks.
The interior is trimmed in tan upholstery and features a matching dash pad, door panels, and square-weave carpeting. Interior amenities include air conditioning, a Porsche-branded wood shift knob, three-point seatbelts, and crank windows. One of the A/C vent louvers is stuck.
A wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation consisting of a 150-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and gauges measuring coolant temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 5,500 miles, about 4k of which have been added during current ownership; true mileage is unknown.
The carbureted 2,110cc flat-four is paired with a Volkswagen Freeway Flyer four-speed manual transaxle. Service in 2020 reportedly included changing the engine oil and adjusting the shifter.
Documentation accompanying the car includes records from the 2015 refurbishment and a certificate of authenticity from Intermeccanica International Inc. indicating that this Roadster Convertible D was completed by Intermeccanica in Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 28, 1985.
I need to redirect my specific interests a tad...
Geeze an '85 pan based repaint from accident damage - $72k.
Wow, crazy, whoever bought that is clueless, sorry. It seems to me that the market on BAT is totally fictitious, I guess if your a seller it might be good but...
P T Barnum is smiling right now
Mine is now for sale. Best offer over $200,000.00
You might get that on BaT. 😱
Geeez....I was trying to buy, basically the same car with a tube frame 2 years ago for 28k. Too much of a hassle in Mass. so... I guess this guy really wanted this car. The last 10 min. of bidding was nuts. I was guessing mid 40s.
Wow. I wasn't even watching this one.
I am blown away by this too. I just sold mine for quite a bit less than that. (Same color but mine had nicer appointments.) Damn it. The consolation is a great guy got my car. The right guy. So ... that is good.
:-(

I wonder if I can come up with a COA from Five Cent Racing's Fabrication Division to amp up the prestige of Pearl???
"Sure, it's a CMC body, but the car was built by Five Cent Racing, the leading Bespoke Speedster builder in Central Massachusetts, from 1994 - 2001 using literally hundreds of custom assembled parts!"
World
Gone
Mad
This is a great time to be a seller.
‘I have been watching and looking for something since I sold my IM, but the prices have escalated so much, it will be interesting to see if the market continues to support it or if it is temporary insanity.
.
Gordon, I hope you saved all those Home Depot receipts.
.
Nucking futs, if you ask me...
$72k plus add-on a 5% buyer's fee from BAT. I wonder if this sale will be a reality or a scam.
Yup. Got all my Home Depot receipts, but more importantly I have the receipts for all of the metric hardware from Village Lumber and Hardware, too.
Bespoke builds require only the finest quality parts, you know.....
Which reminds me: when did IM move to Vancouver? For some reason I thought they moved from FL to CA, then to Vancouver in the early 2000's.
Weren't they in FL in 1985? Or am I confusing them with CMC?

Where will it end?
It's kind of a fun rabbit hole but IMO BaT has jumped the shark. I remember when it was truly Bring A Trailer, with barn finds and projects. Fully 80% of the ads I checked when I looked at this one (I can never have "just one") were dealers flipping cars they'd owned for less than a year, bought from the people that used to post in BaT.

You're confusing them with CMC. IM moved to Vancouver, BC about 1980(?), when Frank Reisner and his partner in LA went their separate ways after building just over 600 ( 609? 610?) Speedsters there. Frank's son Henry now runs IM and some very nice cars have come from their little assembly line.
Thanks @ALB.

Yes and we are hoping he still likes the smell of petrol for many years
