My car uses a single gas strut to hold the engine compartment door open. I'm pretty sure it's Henry's standard way of doing that, and it works perfectly - just right for the weight of the engine lid.

BUT..I've got a Leist copy luggage rack and the strut won't hold it and the lid up. I was thinking to add another strut on the right hand hinge until I got to looking at the rear jumpseat and upholstery. They seem to be solidly glued in place and I'd hate to screw it up back there.

So I wondered if someone has tried getting under the carpeted rear 'wall'. The strut looks to pass through a hole and on into the passenger area where there must be a mount for it's inner end.

Am I doomed to carrying a stick to prop the engine cover when the rack is on the car?

Ken, I just completed a project on my IM Speedster that will allow you to use the existing strut and does not require that you remove the existing strut from the car. I fabricated a bracket from aluminum flat stock that is attached to the existing hinge. You must drill out the rivets in the bracket that is attached to the hinge. Using the same holes, tap them to 1/4"x28 or 20(I used 1/4"x28 on mine.I used 1/4" stainless socket head screws,1" long. Bracket is made of 1/4" aluminum flat stock. Contact me,and I will send you a template for the bracket.along with additional photo's and instructions.
I was under my car today and saw that the inner or forward end of the strut mounts to a bracket above the transmission. It doesn't extend into the passenger cockpit at all.

This doesn't change the usefulness of Allan's bracket. I'm only mentioning it because I'd said above that there appeared to be a need to remove the rear carpet and seat to gain access to the strut forward mount. I was wrong about that.
