Finally got my appointment with my PORSCHE guy(6 week waiting list) and he did his MAGIC....he has been tending to flat sixes for 35 years and especially CARB cars. He drives a mid 80s 3.8/twin plug with 12 coils(one for each plug)/BIG 3 barrel WEBERS/crank fired trans ignition. First thing we did was go for a test drive and he immediately told me that one cylinder was NOT firing(?) and a whole sh*t load of other stuff out of tune....amazed at how much he could HEAR....

My next lesson: he showed me that the carb linkage(cross) was not taught and that both sides were not being fed simultaneously along with slack in the drop linkages(?). #6 not firing at idle and curve/advance out of tune(?). He gave me SIX articles to read so that I would grasp a quality understanding of how a flat six OPTIMALLY functions and especially a 2.7RS with dual 3 barrel WEBERS. He pointed out what I had already known....some predetonation(?) on down shift and a big hesitation spot at around 1800 RPM along with a relatively "poor" idle.

FIVE days later, our post tune test ride was simply amazing.....The car pulls with power........I had smiles BEFORE the tune as I was able to enjoy the "potential" but this was the real thing! He ran thru the entire RPM band/all 5 speeds to show me where the optimal power bands are and WHERE the motor is MOST "HAPPY".....apparently every custom engine has a place where its most happy and is a bit LESS happy on both sides(although still quite happy when tuned). It really kicked ASS and I was both pleased and quite happily reassured on the BUY.....ran like a SCARED RABBIT! And I thought it ran pretty good before the tune short of the few issues....BUT NOW....wooooo NELLIE!

The car's response to the PEDAL is immediate and pulls as is the steering response........probably the most fun I've had in years! The SOUND, by the way is a nice deep but sweet growl.....great exhaust notes...

Apparently the advance/curve parameters were off and he found the optimal level of "degrees" after playing with a variety of possibilities along with full fluid/filter stuff and install of fuel pressure/regulator(?). The WEBERS were in fairly good shape, in need of minor adjustments and plans for down the road(?).

He then pointed out the tendency for my car and others to NOT HOLD the tune: discussion on how mechanical torque and thermal recycling loosens linkage connections(especially clockwise tightening vs counter-clockwise: who'd a THUNK that?) and how MECHANICAL distributors, with and without points, fatigue by virtue of the physics of their mechanical construction(as opposed to OPTICAL/ELECTRONIC)

He explained how the sophistication of electronic fuel injection and ignition would allow mapping and predictable management at various stages of RPMs which "MIGHT" provide a more predictable tune......but he suggested AGAINST it as it might only bring a 3% improvement AND eliminate the original flat six/carb character of the car at great expense(?).

I greatly appreciated his suggestions to NOT spend money just to climb the techno-ladder for minimal return AND to detract the "tinker character" from a late 50s Carrera Speedster(theoretically). In addition he described Henry's build/engineering as plain amazing: he could not believe how he incorporated all of the 911/930 suspension and drive train in such a compact chassis AND the very exacting and CRISP quality of the build....on the level of PORSCHE itself. He went thru the "sound" of the door shut and the fully independent suspension retaining its character despite the SURGERY and slightly STRAINED ANGLES required to tuck it into a speedster!

His ONE issue was all of the attention from the "LADIES" when doing hot/cold test drives and how it pissed off his wife more so than the other PORSCHES that he had to drive as "part of the job"(LOL). Also had the CERAMIC PRO 9H coating done on car as a black car can be a challenge to keep clean and the strong UV/WEATHER band in Hawaii in play.....PATINA unlikely for me. I'm actually liking the FUCHS more and more, especially since the custom MOONS/WHEELS will cost 5K and I'm not jacked in that state of mind....unless I can sell the FUCHS(Al Reed PLUS).

All in ALL...I'm happy and thrilled with the car....the only lingering issue is that the fuel cell/pump does NOT send fuel when tank half empty. We will explore that on the next round but my mechanic wanted me to drive it for a month to get a better feel for the program. Amber MARCHAL FOGS ready for install alsoIM6 Park

Not sure what's going on with the gold lugs, but otherwise I wouldn't change a thing.

METHINX they are a blend/match to the GOLD Carerra 2.7 emblem on the back engine lid AND the GOLD POrsche emblem on the front of car....POSSIBLY(?)

I've always been partial to the BABY MOONS as I am a 50s born child and sort of implanted in my memory....but the FUCHS are growing on me...

Since you have the overiders, perhaps emulate the King of Cool's own Speedster. Some Rudge Knock-Offs should get you there.

If he's not happy with Fuchs, some custom Coddington faux knock-off wheels like Joe Fortino's would look fantastic.

The FUCHS have been growing on me despite my MOONS memories of the 50s....but NO WAY I'm dropping RUDGE $$$ or $5K on Coddington wheels/moons unless I find buyer for FUCHS. I should just keep the FUCHS as homage to the original build of this car back in 2008.......but I am going to ask Henry about the GOLD LUGS(?).

Yea they were expensive but let's face it, none of anything we do to our cars makes any sense. Do what makes you smile  IMG_4937IMG_7248

THE IM6 buy gave me a BIG SMILE indeed, but at some point, and we each have our threshold, the SMILE starts to hurt(LOL). I could barely justify dropping $$$ on the car itself....and would NOT have if it wasn't a plain STEAL/BARGAIN. I'm loving it more each day but just NOT going to DROP 5PLUS LARGE on MOONS or 5 times that on RUDGE despite their storybook heritage AND beauty. BTW, your car is fantastic and I  imagine it moves nicely.

Banzai,

I'll tell you what: you give me $4000 and I will fly to Hawaii and put chrome wheels and baby moons on that car. I have no idea who is quoting you five grand for that, but somebody wants to retire very early.

Theoretically.....and I am far from certain, the plain BABY MOONS(without nipple/emblem) requires a certain wheel design to retain them. Because of the 911 configuration/offset, NOT any wheel will suffice and HENRY/IM designed a BILLET CNC WHEEL with CHRIS CODDINGTON and the back wheels need to be widened to 7 inches, ceramic coated, correct offsets front/back, and SHIPPED Hawaii....$4800!

STODDARD has a less expensive wheel but NOT PERIOD correct and the plain bare MOONS will NOT attach so I need the "nipple" moons. But certainly I am NOT any authority, rather I defer to IMs design specifically for my car......
