I'm still considering engine options for the Speedster I'll be ordering from VS. I'd been thinking about their stock 1915cc with some kind of enhanced cooling when I came across this parked in front of a motorcycle shop in St. Helena, CA today.

This looks like an elegant solution to me that combines somewhat increased engine displacement with an integrated, engine driven fan for both propulsion and cooling. No complicated external motors and fans - not even a fan belt to worry about - and no need for cooling tins, either.

The drivetrain is simpler too - no gearbox, clutch, or complicated linkages. What do you think?

Also, being new to all of this, I'm not sure if this is a Type I or a Type IV. Which one has seven cylinders?

Well, OK, it does require this separate control panel, but I think VS could integrate that into the dash for me for not too much additional cost.

I guess you could, but it probably has an electric start.

The shop was closed and there was no one around to talk to. I don't imagine it's too legal - the California tag was a mock up - and I could see how the CHP might frown on motoring around in this thing on busy urban streets. Parallel parking would be a challenge, too.

I'm guessing it was built as a dune buggy or maybe something for the Burning Man festivities.
