Bob:

Well......All of the original (steel) Speedster owners I know are running either Konis or Bilsteins. An original weighs about 1,850 lbs., versus about the same weight for our cars (Pearl is 2,000 even), although we're a little lighter in the front, so a 356-rate shock on the front might be a tad stiff unless your battery and spare wheel are up there, and then it's just about the same.

I had KYB's until a year or so ago, and went to Konis and it stiffened things up (on an already stiff car) to make it handle crisper at the price of rattle frenzy.

I'm getting old enough to appreciate a mushier ride (and a quieter one, as well, but that's another story) so KYB's for a stock VW sedan would be adequate for that. For anything more, either of those mentioned at the top would be fine.

BTW: I recently ran across these photos of the "before" of your car.

Enjoy!:

I've got 'em on my IM, as well as everything else Henry was offering with the VW beam suspension-- the bigger rear torsion bar, sway bars on both ends, and a rack and pinion steering set-up.

It's stiff, but it corners flat and comes around predictably.

If I did a roadster with a VW beam, I'd use the stock IM shock and suspension package-- but for a speedster, I don't think you'll regret it.
