Saw this while looking at GB's site:

Oil Additives Mandatory

This in from Engle 12/14 "Due to new E.P.A. rules, oil companies are no longer putting the same additive packages in off the shelf engine oils. This makes it necessary to use oil additives to replace the missing ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate) which contains both zinc and phosphorus. With flat tappet camshafts this lubrication is mandatory. Without ZDDP there is insufficient lubrication, and failure of the cam is imminent. Some oil companies have started producing oils with high ZDDP content for daily use, as well as high performance racing oils containing high levels of ZDDP. As part of the Engle Racing Cams Co. warranty, proof of oil additives is mandatory in any claim filed on flat tappet cams and/or components".

You have to be careful, as some oils that have worked for us (and the high perf V8 crowd) in the fairly recent past have changed formulations, significantly reducing the zinc content- diesel oils being one. If possible, it may be better to use an oil specifically designed with ZDDP in it already, as some people question whether adding ZDDP after the fact will play well with the detergent/add pack. Whether there's any validity to this I don't know.

Brad Penn, Joe Gibbs, Valvoline VR1 and Amsoil ZRod are a few I can think of off-hand.

PS- Valve train and spring weight play a part in this; people like Musbjim being able to use anything name brand on sale successfully long term while others have problems with cam/tappet compatability and lifter bore wear (after the tappets start flaking) sometimes before break-in is finished.
