I've have my water cooled speedster for a little over a month and so far it's a great car. I've made a few additions in that time and thought I'd share them with you. First thing I did was put a tracking device on the car. I can monitor the car via my phone or home computer. Also I put together a tool roll, a small compact jack and tire tool, a 12 volt jumper box and I ordered an extra gas cap. I ordered my coco mats a month ago and they just got here, so they went in and look great. I have been looking for a vintage Porsche Dealer license plate frame from my area and found one last year at a swap meet. It was in pretty bad shape, but some media blasting got all the rust and old paint off. I sanded it with 600 and sprayed it silver, then I did the background area in dark gray and hand lettered the letters in a cream white. At the time I also ordered a fau black California license plate to put on at shows. It says "Klawfoot" as in bath tub...... Next I got a small clock and thermometer for the dash. While I like the feel of the stock shift knob, I didn't like the color. It came with a black knob while all the other knobs are ivory. So in my search for a new one I came across a guy in Poland who makes a cool 917 Porsche style shift knob. It arrived last week and look and feels great. While waiting for my car to get completed I was shopping for grill badges as well. I got those on the car a few weeks ago after almost forgetting where I put them. After driving the car for a month I noticed the carpet by the gas pedal was getting dirty. It isn't my style to jump into the car with dirty shoes, but discovered the black soles do leave marks. A little Simple Green took care of it, but I needed to keep it from getting worn out. So I drew up a pattern on some heavy card stock and got a piece of aluminum and cut it to size. I then sanded the edges smooth and test fit my bent and rolled shield. It fit great and looked like it would solve my problem. I left the brushed surface as it was, cleaned it with thinner and sprayed it with clear. I also sprayed the 917 shift knob as it was just a linseed coating and not glossy like the steering wheel. I put a few strips of velcro on the back side of the shield and pressed it into place. It held tight against the German squad weave. My next additions will be a foot set and wind wings from our man Bruce. This car is getting more comfortable with each thing I add.

I have the opposite problem in my Smart. The cheap black carpet rubs off and all my light-colored driving shoes have black marks on the outside of the right foot.

I cut up a piece of silicone cutting sheet and Spray 77’d it to the offending carpet.

Looking good BB.

BB, I really like the metal shield. For mine, I saved the plastic from the carpet and cut a slightly smaller piece than your shield. Not sure how long it will last, but it’s working for now.  I ordered a template for my cocomats.  When it gets here I plan to make it so that the mat extends forward under the clutch pedal a bit.

I will maybe put an Apple disk in mine.

Where did you get a gas cap that works?

I like those knobs but I kind of like having a shift pattern on my knob.  I don’t need it but what about a valet, or mechanic?

Tools…. I plan to have a fan belt and tools to change one.  Most other things I would call AAA, I think.  No spare tire.

I ordered a PCA badge from SMC, but am planning on waiting for another to jump out at an event.

I can’t wait to see what else you do!

Yes it's nice. that Greg uses the plastic carpet cover to protect it when you get it delivered. I used it on the drive home the first day. I could have shoved the coco mat under the pedals, but I didn't want it to interfere with the pedals. I'm ok with it as is.

The gas cap, I ordered it from Greg and should be shipped soon along with my 3rd brake light he forgot to install.

The shifter without a pattern isn't a problem for me. I like the looks and don't plan on valeting it ever or having a mechanic work on it that doesn't know how to shift a common VW trans. Plus any unsavory character hopefully won't know how to move it because there is no shift pattern on the shifter. I have a few more things in the works and will post them as they take shape.

is that plate legal. Thought a CA plate has max of 7 letters.

Thanks Ray ! My wife thought it was corny and no one would get it .......... Well, the oldies GET IT! lol

Hey Bob, no it is not legal. It was a quickly made fake plate for $15.00 that I wonted to use when I went to my first car show. I did apply for a 7 letter California black plate with a different spelling "KLAUFUT" Kinds Germanish if there is such a word.

This morning I decided to fix one thing on the car that was driving me crazy. I have no idea if this is how all the other cars from Vintage Motorcars wiring ends up, but it looks like a rats nest to me. So I took an hour or so and did my best with what I had to hide it. When I ordered the car, I also ordered an extra 5 yards of the baseball vinyl just in case I needed to redo a seat or whatever in the coming years. I took some measurements and cut a piece of aluminum it size and bent it. Added some velcro to the back and trial fit it. It looked good and fit ok, so I cut a piece of my extra vinyl and glued the vinyl to the aluminum. The I trimmed off the corners and installed it. It's not that well protected, but serves the purpose for now. If anyone has pictures of their wiring they would like to share, please post a few.

Thanks, DaveIMG_2692IMG_2693

Looks like a. nIce cover ….Dave on my IM. The seat is placed on a metal box which is carpeted and it hides the fact that the seat is higher and all the electrical is under the seat which is Velcroed to the top and removable for easy access I also have a sub8100 retro sound under the seat .

That looks great Ray, well thought out and clean. I wish Greg had thought of doing that instead of mounting it behind the passenger seat.

I really like that @Butcher Boy!

@IaM-Ray - that is unbelievably clever, similar to the dual radiators and fuel-cell tucked low to give you the super-trunk. You got your car built at the absolute high-water mark in IM's history.

This was my second car though, so I tried to address all the issues that I had with the first car, and Henry would not build me another car. If it was just a repeat of the old one he thought the full Subaru was something he wanted to try that made sense. It wasn’t for the faint of heart because we were doing a lot of R&D, which was painful at times when suppliers do stuff and supply faulty equipment, which is out of the hands of the builder. Needless to say, the builder is left, holding the bag in the end, I loved working with Henry and I really appreciate my car to this day. I added a lot of things myself just like Dave is doing I think in the long run understanding how your car works and what feedback it gives you allows you to prevent a lot of of issues from happening. Enjoy

What does all of that control Dave? It’s not something you see on every car. I’m guessing it’s related to yours being a Suby powered Speedster?

Hey Robert, It is all the fuses, ECU and maybe some relays. I really haven't checked it all out yet. I hope to chat with Greg to find out exactly what is there. Didn't have much time to go over the car when I picked it up. But it drives nice ..........
