Ron.....An infrared thermometer usually looks like a gun. It measures external temps. You point it at your cylinder head, pull the trigger, and voila, it reads out your temp. Racers use them a lot. Poit at all 4 tires and get a temp reading that will give you a clue about scrub, wear, and other factors. You just point at your wife's ( enter ANYTHING) and from the temperature reading you can tell if you should advance.......or go back to the garage.

So, let me get this straight....if my IM gets too hot...that's bad, but if my wife gets too hot...that's good. I hope I don't get the two mixed up.
Seriously, if I pointed this thermometer gun at my engine block would the reading be close to the actual oil temperature? I mean, is the block temperature close to the oil temperature?
Ron
Ron, it wouldn't tell you the oil temp. It would tell you the block temp, the head temp, you could even point it at the oil filter, and that would probably give you a reading within 10-12 degrees of the oil temp.(maybe)
What you might do is after a long hot run, actually measure the oil temp with a dip-in thermometer, and shoot the infrared at the oil filter.. do that a few times...determine the difference and after you did that a few times you would have a pretty close formula to use with just the infrared.

Ron ... Your right ... It's Bob C. ... A lot of Bob Barker's out there ... Maybe you have heard the name before ;-) With the C. people can tell us a part

This unit is very small ... Fit's in the the palm of your hand with a button on the side ... The instructions said not to measure people and animals ??? Guess wives are out !!!
I went to my local radio shack, and bought one, $29.95. So far I know the Enchilada lunch I ordered is 138 degrees F, and my buddies Carne Asada Burrito is 128 degrees F. It does say on the package that it is not accurate in measurement of body temps,,,,,,,,,does that mean I can't measure fender or hood temperature on a really hot day? Life is so confusing !
