Does anyone have information on the installation of case savers or heli coils in the case. I torqued my head bolts before disassedmbly to check for loose studs and found 3. I live in southern Michigan and don't have many shops interested in vw engine work, I checked the knowledge section and couldn't find anything. I may have to open my case to check the rod bearings and thought this to be a good time to fix this. A friend and hot rodder said he has had great luck with jb weld in areas where he didn't want things to come loose, has anyone tried this?

Hate to admit it, but I've brought two engines back to life with JB Weld. I've also added little blobs of weld slag to the inside ends of head studs to keep them from pulling through the case when tightened . . .

If I were you, I'd disassemble the engine and do it right. There is a newer style case saver being offered that is more like the inserts that they use in OHV high out-put engines than the old coil-style that we're used to.

Search the web, call the machinbe shop, hit the auto parts store or paint jobber and find a place that does it right.

JB Weld is for idiots . . .

Luck ! ! !
Chuck; I've used JB Weld a lot and it's a life saver. I know of people who have used it in critical areas in engines with no failures. If I were you I'd send the case out to a good VW machine shop to get everything done. I'd also send it to get it drilled and tap for full flow oil filtering. Check out Hot VW's magazine; there's lots of those specialized shops in California; places like Demello and Gene Berg come to mind.
