Hi Dave,

I have installed a 57 Porsche engine in my speedster, Not to much of an issue doing it. Problems arise with the flywheel ring gear and the starter, as the porsche is 6v, the teeth pitch is different. You either have to change the ring gear or stater pinion. I solved the problem by machining a 12v starter pinion and sleeving a porsche 6v pinion onto it, which is working great. You can also purchase flywheels and starters already converted via the samba. lots of $$ though!

As regards clutch, I used a stock VW cover and plate which bolted straight on, used with an early VW thrust bearing.

Also you need a 90mm o/d body 12v dynamo or an alternator conversion kit.
The other option that's much easier is to use a 6 volt starter on the 12 volt electrical system. It turns the engine over much faster and provided you don't "lay" on the starter, it will live a long life.

We used to use this kind of a set up on high compression VW engines prior to high torque starters. We'd use an old bus 6 volt, 200mm flywheel (diameter of the clutch pressure plate) and a 6 volt starter. (all other 6 volt VW's had a 180 mm clutch)

Changing the alternator/generator and the coil is all that's necessary to make the engine work in your chassis
