I have purchased a new passenger side mirror for my Im. I am a little nervous about drilling the holes in the correct locations to match the drivers side. The mount is in the door and I realize I need to remove the door panel, I just wish I had a templet. Any suggestion?

If you have the gasket that fits between the base of the mirror and the body, use it as a template. Easy to remove door panel. You first must remove the door handle. Once you have removed the panel, then carefully remove the paper that covers the doors innards(unless you want to have to cut a new piece). Good luck.
Thanks, I got the gasket template, I am referring the possession on the door to match the drivers side.
Whit, Make a paper template off of the drivers side as referenced from the contour on the leading edge of the door to the mirror base gasket. You could remove the mirror entirely or just try to reference of the base of the mirror gasket and then flip it over (mirror image) to the passenger side.
Great point Tom.... My right-side mirror is basically just for looks.. but I have it turned completely inside so that I can actually use it too! (I have to lean a little but it still works!)
Speedster "D"
I wouldn't live without a right side mirror. I put plenty of miles on my car and that is the reason I installed one and it works like it should. Take great care in the positioning and have a second person hold it in that position while you sit in the driver's seat and check for functionality. My mirror had to be tweaked a bit so that it could be mounted, then adjusted inboard enough to be used properly.
Thanks Dave that is how I feel
I agree. I rely on the passenger mirror all the time - especially with the top up. I have done this many times on old British sports cars. If you want it to be a perfect cosmetic match, then remove the driver side mirror as suggested above to make the template for the other side. Having someone hold the mirror before drilling is also a good idea just to make sure you will be able to make it work with the desired positioning. If not, you can cheat a bit with the positioning and it should not be noticeable. Good luck.
You may find that you will need to modify the base socket where the mirror mounts to it so it can be angled inward enough for you to actually see the traffic behind you on the right. It's pretty easy to do, just grind or file the left side of the socket so the mirror can pivot further in towards the driver.
I think it was Gordon who also suggested just placing a small clear plastic suction cup in the socket to cause the mirror to stand slightly out of the socket and thus give it more inward adjustability.
I'm sure there are pictures somewhere on the site and that it has been talked about in the past.
I tried the suction cup thing and it wouldn't work on mine so I did the little bit of grinding like Troy said to get a little more twist inward on the mirror face part. And x2 on what George said on a better and safer view especially with the top up.
I installed a convex passenger side mirror works great. There was a discussion on the forum a while ago Good Luck
Yes I did see that post. That is what I order from Stoddard, I was very pleased with the one day shipping and the overall experience with them.
It has been talked about on here but some Speedster makers actually use two LEFT side mirrors. A left side mirror is NOT the same as a rightside mirror.
Gordon posted a fix to turn a left mirror into a right one but it didn't work for me.
Stoddard sells a real right side mirror--not cheap but hey, it's the Speedster!
I got one of Stoddare's right side mirror and it has plenty of range of movement and remedies what I thought was actually a safety issue.
My mirrows are mounted on the fender rather than on the doors--I can actually adjust the driver's side one from the seat. Now that I have them set I tightened them down and they stay put.
Hope this helps someone.
