In another hijacked thread, I was asking for insurance company recommendations. There was a lot of talk about the Automobile Club and their $250/year policies, but that just didn't work out for me. When I questioned them closely about what would happen if my car was totaled, they said they would base the value on that of a 1969 VW, which is what my car is registered as. They would take into consideration modifications to the car, but I would have to show them examples of widebody Speedsters that had actually been sold. Since most widebodies are CMCs and sell in the range of $10,000 to $20,000, that would be the best I could hope for.
The other companies that offered "agreed value policies" all had good prices, but they had the typical restrictions, can't drive the car to work, etc..
Finally, I called my daily driver company, Amerprise Insurance through CostCo and they said they had an "in house" company that wrote policies for "kit cars," American Modern Insurance Group.
I called them and they said that under the terms of their policy, I could drive the Speedy to work on the average of twice per week per year. That works out to 104 times per year or every work day for May, June, July, August and September!!! Wooo Whooooo!!!! No worrying about driving the Speedy to work. The price??? $411/year for a $30,000 agreed value policy.
