Anyone out there have their car insured with USAA? If so I would like to know what you did to get them to insure it. They sent me off to American Collectors Insurance and they do not allow pleasure driving. I have read the posts about the other limited coverage insurance companies Haggerty etc and don't want all the limitations they put on. I just want to drive the car and enjoy it.

Thanks

Troy,

My wife and I use USAA for our everyday cars. We tried to insure the speedster with them, but was disappointed by the very young and ill-informed operator that tried to handle our initial call. A second attempt to reach our regular insurance rep was a little bit better, but was quoted $650 plus for the year. I can't quite remember what the limitations were, but they admittedly said that kit/collector cars was not their forte.

Hagerty was my next attempt and was quite reasonable with their coverage. They matched our daily driver liabilities with a limitation of 2500 miles for the year. They are much more equipped to handle your questions and concerns with regards to these specialty cars.

Much Luck - Mel
Mel,
Yes the agents on the phone are pretty limited in their knowledge. They would however insure the car as a 1961 VW (pan) but would not insure it for the speedster value just the value of the VW which is chump change compared to the speedster. I am awaiting a call back from the Amer. Collectors as they also do not have very knowledgeable folks on the phone. When I asked her about pleasure driving she said sure no problem, but when I quoted the policy I received that says parades and shows etc. and requested she put her statement about pleasure driving is OK as long as I drive less than 2500 mi. per year she said she had to talk with her supervisor. Depending on the answer i get when she calls back I just may cancel and switch. Cheap ($250 a year) insurance is great as long as I can drive the car.

Troy,

I rarely post, but you guys are talking about my profession (classic/collector car insurance). If you are having problems getting a quote or information regarding coverage always ask for an underwriter and get beyond the sales person. You will hear two different stories depending on whom you talk to (go ahead and ask the same question on usage to three different people and see what answers you get). I think it is weird that they have to call you back too, any rep. you talk to should have the answers/quote right there for you especially if this is the only insurance they offer.

One more parting shot, get it in writing before you pay.

I too recently purchased a speedster and after 40 years with USAA I assumed that they would insure it without question. Well once again I am made an ass by that word. They wouldn't even talk to me. I am pissed enough to change my policies somewhere else.

I searched and finally got my local insurance agent to go to Hargity and got full coverage for $254 per year.

Good Luck

David, I can't figure how you got a price like that????? I have my speedster insured with Hagerty, and pay $340.00 per year, maybe the amounts of coverage are different. I got pretty high coverage, and was happy with the price, because some insurers wanted a whole lot more . And we are both in the Bay area.

I have been covered by both State Farm and by AAA (at diferent times). Neither had any limitations at all on mileage. "Declared value" for theft, collesion. I also have my other three vehicles on the same policy. The cost of the speedster is about the same as my other vehicles (none new), liability being about the same for all vehicles these days. Still haven't figured out why they decided to call it a '71 (year of pan) Porsche Speedster? Go figure.
