I am already on the dark side but I thought it was because I failed to pay the light bill ...... ;-)
Stan, Henry will install a Subie engine if asked, and he should, since the Subie engine is a better choice. Henry's problem is he can't get new ones. And a Subie 5 speed can be installed in place the a VW gearbox.

The poster developed a crownwheel & pinion set for the Subaru transmission that allow the differential to be 'flipped'.
A Subie engine with a Subie transmission - makes sense to me.

Ron, thanks for posting the link for the flipped diff and complete conversion kit. That
For a 5-speed that can handle decent horsepower levels stock and has limited-slip diffs available for cheap, the converted Subie box is quite reasonably priced.
Marty, u r a dawg. i was actually feeling a little sympathy for u being speedsterless, i should have known. anyways, isnt it great ordering a new vehicle. many sleepless nites as delivery closes in.
I tried to stay away but Lane kept harassing me. He said, "resistance is futile". Or something like that.
You WILL be assimilated.
Ron:
THANKS FOR THAT LINK!!!!!!!!!
Finally, there may be hope for a super-quiet, 300+hp, turbo'd Speedstah and maybe even with an automatic!!
The ultimate sleeper........

Gordon, that new ring and pinion set for the subie box only works with 4wd 5-speeds. The STI 6-speed and automatic subie boxes can't be converted.

Gordon, I happen to have a low-mileage(70K) 1998 4wd Legacy 5 speed box. If it will work for you, pick it up on your way back from Carlisle this year. I'll make you a REALLY good deal on it.

Marty,
Congratulations on the build. When will you be picking up the ride? September late would be perfect and the IM BBQ. BTW watercooled is NOT the only way to get a heater that works. A 911 powered beast like mine with SSI heat exchangers will blast you with more heat than you will ever need. AC the motor has plenty or power to drive a AC unit.
That said Henry needs a new style and option that is a one of a kind. This will be fun to watch the build!
Cheers!
BTW I agree a four speed is plenty.....five just splits the ratios and you get the same overdirve for a final drive.
One last thing Henry is building YOUR dream but listen to him he knows what will work best with all his knowledge building cars of all kinds.

Thanks Dave. I thought about going 911 power but their was the cost difference and them Damn Porsche mechanics charge a lot a money. I know jack about cars (except how to drive them) so I am hoping to get some decent reliability out of the Subaru Boxer engine. Plus, these guys are right down the street from my house if I need to trouble shoot and tweak things.

Ron - thank you for posting that link. You've given me the last piece for my dark puzzle of horsepower madness....

I have a 300hp turbo subie w/a 5 speed subie trans in my Cabriolet and it works great. (perfect fit) just enough HP. I have 15k miles without a single problem with the drive train.
Michael, that's an awesome combination. Where did you mount the intercooler?
Marty, Just exactly how long is this 'work of art' supposed to take to assemble? Or what is Henry's estimated delivery date? As most of us SAS Subie guys will tell you, the agony is in the wait.
I was also wondering if the new engine is an issue. I seem to recall that one of the limitations when I looked into a new engine several years ago was that Subaru would not sell a so-called 'crate engine'. SAS ultimately offered me a gently used engine from a Subaru donor.
I am with you on the heat and air! :-)

4 to 5 months is the estimate. Maybe sooner if things go well. Subaru engine will be 100% rebuilt or remanufactured.
Well, you guys are really tearing me up -- really. I am sort of a purist, having come from owning 356s previously during some other lifetime I barely remember. So I am an air-cooled kinda guy, and I like the original mystique too, so am very happy w/ my original looking/feeling/sounding (and properly spartan) Speedster replica. But, I gotta tell you that the notion of all these modern convenienvces (EFI, turbos, heat, A/C, 5-spd, etc.) not to mention 300 f-ing HP -- are you kidding me, 300 HP in a 1800 lb car??! -- do sound very, very cool. So I think: How awesome would that be?? Ans: PFA. And to have Henry build it? There would be no point in dying and going to heaven, 'cause I'd be there already. It's only money, right??
I will follow this build w/ some interest, and a little bit of envy . . .

Marty, That's pretty fast delivery - sounds great! We look forward to seeing you (with Sandy) and perhaps a guest appearance by Dr Choy in the Smokies this fall. An old timer like the Creme Brule Coupe may be getting a little long in the tooth with its 1998 Subie engine and automatic transmission. At the moment it seems to be running quite well and the A/C still works just fine.
Not going widebody? We thought we could count on you Marty, but you've really let all of us widebody guys down.
I'll never read another one of your posts as long as I live and I'm calling for a boycott of your posts by all the rest of us widebody guys.
Vince, Leon....Are you with me?
You know that Henry can split your car down the middle and add a few inchs to it's width without adding the flares.
So, unless you change your mind, you are no longer invited to our widebody owners get together in Maui later this year: you traitor.

Marty, welcome to the Wet Side. Since your car is going to be completed in 4-5 months you should be able to make the Dragon Tour again this year. Sorry I didn't get over to Asheville last year to meet you and Sandy hope you can make it this year.
My new SAS 280 HP Turbo CABRIOLET aka "White Lightning" will be there along with Scott Teele and his similar 280 HP Turbo CAB. It will be a blast to see a SUBY Roadster built by Henry. I visited his shop when I was selecting my Builder and he showed me an Audi 2.2 TT powered CAB that he was working on, it looked great.
I wanted to share with you and the Thread a picture of engine that is installed in my car. Your 2.5 SUBY will be similar.

Someone spent a lot of time blocking that body out. That paint looks flawless!
I took the coward's way out - went with white to show no flaws.

My pleasure Leon. Just be sure you have your Speedster ready when I send the transporter to ship it off to Maui.

Nolan, Crackers are not Lane's style.
Hey, Cuz, let me say it one more time, what everyone can plainly see: that new ride of yours is magnificent. That's a great shot of the superb paint, the bee hives, the whole thing. Very well done. Would love to see it up close and personal.
Troy: The Tinker Toy will be ready. Will they ALL be on the same transporter? We're REALLY excited and again our Thanks.....
Gordon/Kelly, thanks guys...I just wanted something different....
I think I got it....It appears the Traditional body is the choice of most on the SOC, so this thing sticks out like a sore thumb....

Marty--I was on the fence about Asheville but if you're bringing your new ride I'll be there!
How about some particulars? I know it will be traditional and not wide --picked a color? What specs so far like brakes--no doubt you'll spring for 4 wheel discs. What else is on the "goody list".
Bringing the Boxter to Carlisle?
Can't wait to see more details on the new build.

Well plethora may translate to 9 Tubarus attending Carlisle, including some turbo models.
Oh and Vince, I vote for flares and wide bodies, bee hive optional!

I'm with you 100% on the 4 cyl in the IM/6 frame, Felix. If I were doing another, I'd do exactly that, with a big Type 4 mill. I really doubt I'd go with the complexity of a Porsche 6, and I'd never do a hairy-edge Type 1 again.
For me, the longer wheelbase and full 911 front suspension are the main advantage to the package- a truly usable front trunk area (with the fuel cell nestled between the frame rails as on Dave's car) would make the car fantastic for weekend trips. The beefier frame would just be icing on the cake.
If I'd have known then what I know now.....

Going non-turbo with low end torque cam & machined heads for higher compression. My 2275CC T-1 had plenty of power but I did not always like the way it was delivered. I decided on the late model Porsche 915 5-Speed. The engine will have broad torque curve and should be suffient for my driving style. I dont want anything thats too finicky. I am going pretty basic with the engine, I am spending a few extra dollars to have the wiring harness done right. Peter Venuti has been a big help too. With the heavy duty tranny I can always add more power or go turbo. One of the best WRX tunners(AMS)in the country is 1.5 miles from my house.
