Several years ago I bought a Porsche book from an antique store in San Luis Obispo, CA. The book is published by an English firm called Brooklands Books and is titled "Porsche Cars 1952-1956.
In the book, the author talks about his experiences with a 550 from the factory. Numerous poor quality photo's are published and one photo shows a factory car with a steering wheel very similar to a polished metal and wood signature Nardi. The wheel appears to be larger in diameter that "today" Nardi, possibly 14-15 inches. The author even says that the wheel is Italian. The "horn" button is black with a gold Porsche crest. In the same photo, a 2" diameter dash mounted clock is clearly visable. It's located beneath the 2 horizontal dash knobs and to the right of the key. I never knew that clocks were available. Anyone have further information????

NEWBIE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't own a Spyder yet (thank God for this website, so I can drool over other peoples cars) but I do own a 1979 928 (fun car). Anywho, I was browsing the forum and stumbled onto your post. A friend of mine just completed restoring a 1960 RS60 (the real deal, and the only one in Canada to my knowledge) for a customer. The wheel you describe sounds identical to the RS60 wheel. The rim of the wheel is not wood like the Nardi, it's actually bakelite (plastic) but it does look like wood. The centre cap has a black background and a gold Porsche crest incased in clear plastic. My brother inlaw took some pictures of the car and I'm pretty sure he has a shot of the wheel. I'll post a link when he puts the pics on his website. Hope it'll help. Can't help you on the clock issue. Sorry.

Cheers!

Larry,
I just recently installed one of those clocks. They come from 356 Porsches and are readily available on e-bay. Look up Kienzle/VDO clocks.
These are electromechanical and usually come in 6 volt only. They run from $100.00 to about $200.00 depending on condition.J.C. Whitney sell s a voltage drop converter you will need for around $10.00. You can also get a 8-day mechanical (wind-up) clock from split window VW's which cost more but don't have the black face/green numerals that match the Speedo and Tach.
There are also a couple of (Palo Alto Speedo is one) places that sell Quartz replicas but you are probably looking at $300.00+
Good luck,
Hans
As promised here is a little video set to some Miles Davis, of the RS60. Unfortunately the pictures my Brother in law took were lost because his camera and the film were stolen the following day!!!! AHHHHHH!!!!!

I am sure the owner will let us take more pictures of the completed car. Please feel free to post any comments on his site.

Cheers! And enjoy!!!!
Greg Lewis
