This is only a small fraction of the information about him and his business practices, none of it is made-up!  Post a message about him on the SpeedsterOwners.com website and see what the response is.
Please send me pictures of Speedsters that he has under construction in his shop.

Hi Troy,
Saw your link online. My partner and I have several custom 356 replicas under construction, 9 presently.  He is Steve with SAS and My company is American Companies.  We would like to add your windows as an accessory for customers and future customers. Each customer picks everything he wants in his build.
Could you give me pricing for your windows?
And window options.  Also, other products you have.
Thank You,
Jan Tubbs

If people weren't getting ripped off, the Steve Lawing situation would be an interesting case study on the power of the grift that keeps giving.

There is no shortage of information all over the web on this guy. There's a trail of bankruptcies. There's been an entire forum devoted to people who ordered and never received cars. The guy is near 80 and is still grifting people, who keep sending money.

Matt in Arizona came and went, but Steve Lawing keeps truckin' on.

I'm just not sure how this is even possible. I get dinged for a sidewalk "in the wrong place" (as per obscure ordinance), and it costs me thousands of dollars, three months of my life, and probably a bit of my health. This guy's livelihood has consisted solely on taking deposits from people for stuff he'll never deliver for more than 15 years and he's been left alone.

I'm not really sure what law enforcement is doing, but it's not protecting people from getting scammed, over and over and over again.

When one is well versed with the knowledge of law sadly, there are many loops holes that allow for the Perp to come continue screwed the honest guy. Someday I need to tell the Trunk Ride Story in person ~

Please, please, please tell me you put John Steele in a trunk!

I'm thinking the good ole boys down in Tennessee don't mind Lawing suckering all the pinko commies from either coast...

@DannyP - I was actually thinking that the chances of getting a Knoxville, TN District Atty. interested in a fraud case was probably better than one from Maricopa County.

But in reality, neither of them seems to be too interested in doing their job.

As far as Mr. Steele ever paying for his misdeeds - it'll never happen unless it's some sort of "street justice." He's Teflon with the law - because despite lying every time he opens his mouth, he does actually deliver cars. Perhaps not the cars he promised, nor the cars people expected, but there is a car at the end of the transaction. 20 years ago, I was sure he was going to end up beaten into a coma, but some guys know just how far to push. John was always one of them.

Tennessee's Stevie Wonder, years ago the local TV there did an investigation and report on him and it went nowhere.  As for as getting the Tennessee AT involved they are on an annual budget and will only take on cases that are a "political good fit" so to speak for the AT office, with the remainder being left to the consumers having to drag it through the lower courts at their time and expense.  Finally,  Jekyl Hyde is what it is and all that can be done is to make others aware of past practices. I had a Jekl Hyde turnkey Speedster and a HumVee replica delivered when I was an auto shop teacher in Maryland. Both vehicles were unsafe and an absolute mess to include wiring and brake issues, doors that didn't close properly, loose body on chassis, Steering issues, large paint issues, hard top that didn't come close to fitting correctly etc etc.

Sounds like a perfect teaching moment for up and coming new mechanics, no?   🤣

The kids I had were really into it and could pick out the faults,  when I brought out a Porta Power to " adjust " the roll bar cage so the metal framed StayFast door would close on the Hum-Vee replica is when the kid's eye brows raised:~)

These were " At Risk" youth that were sent to the program via Judge instead of harsher penalties.  I had to interview each prospect and that best tale was the girl that stole the grandmother's pickup only to rear end a Maryland State Trooper at a light :~)
