Ron---I am not all that accomplished with either mechanical or craft things but I did replace my carpet myself and it turned out fine.
I first ordered a set from John Steele but had some fitment issues with it and returned it. Probably my own fault. Then I got a set from Kirk of the original Vintage Speedsters in Hawaiian Guarders who made my VS. The set fit perfectly and it has stayed looking new with the plastic sheeting I use to protect it when I'm not showing the car.
Half the benefit of this job was that I was able to paint the pan with truck bed sealer which helped the water intrusion issue. Plus I installed Dynamat about everywhere the carpet was to go as well as inside the doors. An incredible improvement!
The only thing I would change if I ever did the carpet again would be to get some genuine square weave like Henry uses in the IMs. I don't know if an IM set would fit or not. I*t might work to buy the carpet material and have the pieces cut and edged somewhere. The carpet I have now isn't real German square weave and the difference in quality between what I have and what Henry uses is vast. For all the work, to spend a couple hundred more bucks on the project would have been smart, I think. I'm very happy with what have, but not thrilled.
