Brandon, I have a 1983(?) Intermeccanica that was pretty trashed when I got it and I have just about finished redoing the entire car. The only items left are having a new top made, getting proper seats and new carpet. I have had mixed experiences with parts from different vendors. I got rid of the 914 gauges and put repros in from JPS. I had to create a trim ring for the tach because the 914 tach is bigger than the repro - not difficult. I bought ALL porsche emblems for it - I'd made the mistake of buying some "aftermarket" emblems and they were really sub-par. I got chrome trim from JPS and haven't put it on yet but it seems to be the correct fit. As far as the carpet goes - I'm going to do it myself using the current pieces as a pattern. I using a grey outdoor small loop and I'm going to trim the edges with black vinyl - time consuming but a lot less expensive that n\ buying a kit that I'm not certain will fit correctly anyway. I also got door rubber one of the makers and that didn't fit either so I made my own. And finally, I just got my car back from getting painted at Maaco. I talked to the shop mgr on the advice of the fine folks here and got him to spray it with a single stage poly (same as orig. color) for $350 w/ 4yr guarantee. I'll be posting some pics in the next day or so so feel free to call on me if there is anything I can help you with. Mickey
Micky, I've been researching carpeting for my 78 Intermeccanica. What your doing sounds great. The vinyl your talking about, where did you purchase it and what is the process to make the binding. I'm lookin to do tan carpet with black vinyl binding. Any tips are appreciated

Thanks
Chris
Hey Chris, I have not started my carpet project yet. The carpet I'm getting at Lowes for around $4.50 a sq yd. As far as the trim goes - I'm going to first try vinyl by cutting it in 1 1/2 in. strips, doing a 1/4 in hem on either side and then sewing it around the edges. If that doesn't work (worries about the strength of the sewing needles) I'm going to use a 1 in piece of nylon ribbon (the same stuff they use for belts and straps) that you can get at any fabric store. My concerns with the vinyl besides it being too thick for the needle, is it cracking over time and possibly too much "bunching" in the corners. The nylon ribbon with hold up to just about anything but it doesn't match the rest of the interior (I'm a bit of a stickler for details). I plan on getting started in the next couple weeks so I will be sure to pass along any tips. Mickey
There's a tool that is used to change ribbon stock into binding as you sew...can't recall the official name. Its a piece of metal that you feed the straight ribbon into one end, so it has edges to keep the ribbon straight, and then the metal is bent such that it folds the edges of the ribbon over creating the binding...kind of like a U channel with the two edges folded inwards. (I can picture it in my mind but I'm not sure my words do it justice)

The tool is used to either press or iron the binding coming out or it can be used in conjunction with the sewing operation and it feeds the folded ribbon, or binding, out and into place to be sewed.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this used in quilting...the wife is quilting crazy but does not recall thsi tool. Anyone know what its called or where to get one?
Okay, found what I was talking about only this one attaches to the sewing machine. Available in 3 sizes and the largest will make binding (I guess its called bias tape?) up to 1" wide which should be plenty big enough for a carpet. $6.95 on Ebay...

I PURCHESED A COMPLETE CARPET KIT FROM VINTAGE.IT LOOKES LIKE IT SHOULD WORK NICELY BUT SOME OF THE OTHER PRODUCT ARE A LITTLE SHABBY.NOT TO KNOCK THEM.NEXT IS MY ENGINE.WANT TO REBIULD IT WITH A LITTLE CHROME.
THANKS GUYS
Most of the aftermarket engine chrome pieces don't fit properly and the chrome is very thin. They pit and rust within a couple of weeks, You'd be better off powder coating the OEM stuff and maybe using stainless steel screw/bolts to dress it up. Aluminum intakes and the alternator can be polished up to near chrome look with WD sandpaper, buffing with jewelers rouge and protecting with Mothers Mag polish.
