HI all,  I recently acquired a 2009 IM Roadster and have been educating myself on this site.  It is a great resource with a lot of knowledge.   I love the car and have a desire to fix a couple things to make it look more correct.  Specifically, I would like to replace the steering wheel with a correct 356 A wheel.   My understanding is I would probably need to replace the column in the car with an original modified porsche column,  Anyone have any experience with this?D277D310-4A3A-43A8-A380-F974D3BFD50BAF16DDA7-F154-4DF6-B191-BB1AB551939639D1CF35-36C4-4FA0-A1C4-025908633251C1953E76-E254-4F0D-ABA2-AB8E8E2EBB60613380BA-C914-42B8-A0DD-7D3BF528B6C8

Hi, I can't see the side of your hub, but it looks like you have an Ididit, column.  Actually Henry did it.   You either have a 9 bolt hub or a 6 bolt hub, but it looks to me like a 6 bolt hub but this you must verify.  by removing the horn button to expose it I would think.  Then it is simply changing the hub and or using an adapter and getting the wheel from MSW.  but you no not need to change the column unless you do want to make it more original.  The Original thing gets long in the tooth as time goes on and your motivation wanes to make it so as .... well it never will be anything but a close replica.

also, something to consider is wheel sizing. These wheels are 400mm.. closer to the originals which were 420mm.  Most wheels used in our cars are 380mm… can’t remember what the flat-4 banjo sizing is  (likely installed in your car),  and sizing up to 400mm will reduce a little bit of the space between the wheel and seat/shifter making it a tighter squeeze to get in and out if the car, and reducing space between your right knee- wheel and shifter.

I have enjoyed two MSW wheels ( solid product), a banjo like yours, and a couple Mike Lempert wood wheels - VDM, Nardi gulling and slotted DArrington - flat and dished ( https://pbase.com/mdlempert/prices&page=all ,  custom built- my favorite).  Finally landing on a Lempert Slotted Derrington Style Spoke with 1” dish (vs flat) for confort. ( and half the price of an MSW.  Personally I would have paid more for the Lempert wheels… they are a work of art- I keep the two not on the car hanging in my home office wall)

steering wheels are like shoes… so many options, just have to find one that fits just right since it’s the primary contact point between you and the car ;-)

happy hunting!!!

Glad you chimed in Lfepardo... I wanted MSW to make a 420mm but so far he has not responded to my email.

The column you have has a hub that IM drilled to accommodate the wheel.  If you remove those 3 hex screws you can take another picture of the actual hub and then see if it has extra holes and you can see what adapter you will need or if you have to change the hub.

For info- if you are looking for the original flavor…the 1960 356B (T5) Roadster, and later B/C models, featured a different steering wheel than pre-A, and A 356 speedster and coupe.  This wheel does have a dish and comes closer to the driver.

The neat thing about our cars is that you can make them what you want.

MSW makes them as well with an hub adaptor for VW 1961-‘71 steering shafts ( 40 spline, thin spline).

The black wheel would look great on your car… if you could sort the adaptor bit.  Maybe worth the experiment…. this truly is a madness!!!!
BtW, Chung Nial (mynamechung@yahoo.com) , the owner of MSW, is great to work with.  https://www.mswsteeringwheel.c...-b-c-steering-wheel/

Luis, on all newer IM's that were built with an Ididit column it can be done but essentially the hub portion has to be made accordingly but Chung Nial I don't think makes something that would accommodate them but I may be in the dark.

Here is my hub with the blue tape attached which is a Nardi 6 bolt pattern....ONLY the torqued Bolt holds it but it has SPLINES but unaware of the pattern.

Then you have Marty's wheel which has a Derrington 9 hole hub and is held down with Acorn nuts in SS.   So hope this helps you.

Thank you Ray… yes the Thai MSW web site always trigers the security risk warning, not sure why,.. but I have yet to have any issues when surfing the site,  his Facebook site does not trigger the warnings.

speaking of a Marty, I thought I just saw him list his hub ( for his previous IM)..  loved his Darinton wheel… is the inspiration for the Lempert one my car now sports.

sorry for the confusion, I didn’t realize the IMs used a GM based column/;splines.
