Bob - There has been a lot of discussion on this issue by people with more knowledge than myself. Do a search in Knowledge. For now, make sure your carbs are tightened properly. Any air leak could cause this. The second thing I would do is make sure your 44's are balanced. If the are not, popping will occur. You will need a flow meter to do this. It's not hard to balance them, but you need to do a little reading before you start. Gordon Nichols has a good explanation on how to do this. Good luck.
That sounds like good advice..

But if it only happens when the engine is cold and it disappears after 5 minutes of idle you need to check the valves,,

One might be getting too snug at the rocker.


Oh if it has points? also suspect a fried condenser from leaving the key on.. that won't go away after a warm up. It will only get worse with pop and cracking noises..
