Years ago I added the Hella unit to my '72 Porsche 914.  It was easy to install and worked great.  The switch knob matched the dash perfectly.  Recall someone saying (maybe on SAMBA) that it wouldn't work on a T1 though.

The comment saying it wouldn't work-

Instructions are at -

I purchased the hella intermittent wiper switch you mentioned. What I received came in a yellow hella box with a sticker with part # HL87200 on it, and the box is labeled 5WA 001 871-041 "Screen Wiper Intermittent Control Unit".

I read through the instructions, and, unless I'm misreading, this switch works in CONJUNCTION with the existing wiper switch to give you intermittent capability. Also, after checking voltages per the included instruction sheet, which you can see here http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/classicgarage_2093_32877125 this switch will not work with the wipers on my 71 super beetle because the test lamp flashes during wiper operation (see paragraph 4.3.8 in the instructions). I tried it anyway, just to see, and wired it per the diagram shown here http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/classicgarage_2092_134122219 in the 2nd option, as the wipers on the beetle are negatively connected. It did not work.

I'm going to return this switch and get the other mentioned in my original post.

The same tread recommended and inexpensive Cole-Hersee unit:

Larry's Off road parts has  the best kit  its the Bronco 2 setup Like the ford truck, Pinto and the Cobra 2 used.. But you can use the VW wiper motor .  The ford switch works best and you can tread any knob to work with it   I use the 54 -56 ford truck dash bezels and incussions they make it look factory and it has a wash function built in it..   First class set up.
