Hello to all,

My name is Mike and I'm from Ontario, Canada. I just joined the site and am looking forward to advice and sharing the ride with all of you.

I recently purchased a 57 Speedster replica and I must say what a blast it is, I really cannot believe how much fun it is to drive, I look forward to sliding in and just buzzing around.

The fun will be short lived however as I am planning to give the car a fresh update, it is a 1989 build from a Intermeccanica mold. It has a 1600cc engine from a 1973 Super Beetle and I'm just learning more about the car.

This is were I will defer to all of the experts here for advice on things like the proverbial "do's and dont's" as well as best place to source parts, emblems and the like.

I have already read some past threads that are full of excellent suggestions and resources.

Sounds like its already sorted. Just keep everything as is and repair as it breaks. That way you can enjoy it and learn how to drive it. I don't know your driving experience but rear engine is a little different (I had a relearning curve myself)

These cars love to go on mountain roads. To me its all about shifting up and down the gears and going around corners.

A good running 1600cc if all you need for starters or maybe forever. Do you have dual carbs?

Hello and thanks to everyone that sent welcomes and support.

I spent the better part of today removing bumpers, trim, lights etc etc etc, I'm sure you have heard this all before and probably all experienced it first hand.

It reminds me of customizing my first 66 Ford econoline only much more exciting and engaging.

Regarding your question Dave, after speaking with the original builder of the car he did re-do the top end and has upgraded to 2 Solex carbs, I believe 40's?

Should I consider changing over to Webers, is it worth the cost and what kind of difference can I expect?

To anyone interested in responding, were should I order exterior parts from ie: rubber seals for tail lights, rubber inserts for front and rear bumper trim etc?

Michael, My fellow SOC'ers have already been too nice to you, and as you will discover in time, I'm the last to give advice on any technical $hit, but in IMHO Webers would be at the bottom of my list if I was purchasing new carbs....I prefer Kadrons or Solex, and I have had all three...I still run Webers on my Ghia, which I would trade for Kadrons any day of the week....

Mike, keep those pieces you're taking off the car -- putting them in the classifieds here is much better than tossing them out with the bathwater.
Most folks here will trade or barter for cast-offs in good shape, or put them toward future considerations. Almost every piece of my car's original equipment went to someone else's project. It's pretty gratifying.
You guys are great it's like sitting at the dinner table of an Italian family and getting on each other... and Vince how did you get that photo of my wife?

Thanks once again for the good information, I will keep the pieces that I remove and decide not to re-use, if I don't get sensible before I know it everything will be new.

I will post some photos of the car in its present state and throughout the process, appreciate the help and look forward to many future discussions.

Thought you might appreciate this...

A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo, and when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular culling of the weakest members.

In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills off brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.

In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, constantly making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.

The guy with the horns looks very familiar I just can't quite place him.
