I am posting this here rather than "Anything goes" because it relates to my Vintage Speedster.

After having lunch today I returned to my VS in the parking lot to find a business card with the Porsche Club of America" logo on the front under my windshield placed there by the Arkansas Membersip Director  with the message printed on the card; "Join the club.  Porsche Club of America" .

Although I have never tried to fool anyone about my car, I know my Speedster looks pretty authentic, plus the AR antique license plate  does add some cachet, but I am surprised it fooled the AR Porsche Club of America's Arkansas membership director !    ( If I'm correctly surmising  his thinking in leaving the card correctly).

Maybe I should go ahead and join then sell it for $150,000 to one of the members?

I got a pretty good chuckle out of this.   : )

Nothing new here.  PCA members often don't know anything about replicas and cannot tell a replica from the "real deal" from beyond tapping a body panel with their ring for a "click" or "clunk".  All he saw was another 356 without the local club's badge on it and dropped his card.   I have a bunch of small brochures I use to advertise my local club, too (affiliated with, but not part of the PCA).  Best to call him first......Some PCA affiliates welcome replicas, some do not (and most can't tell the difference) but all PCA affiliates are losing 356 members nationwide.

When I had my VS, I was invited to join the PCA chapter in Knoxville.  Some members were quite taken with the concept of the replica Speedster.  I was told I could join but with the understanding I could not be judged at a show since it wasn't the real deal.  That made perfect sense to me, but I didn't join because my buddy, who invited me, sold his '65 coupe and dropped out.  I lost interest.

As a long time PCA member (owned many Porsches) and replica Speedster owner I can tell you that to be a member you must be a current Porsche owner.  Membership applications require car description and VIN.  Associate memberships for none owners are available with limited voting and participation rights.  I can tell you that most Porsche "members" do not appreciate participation by replica Speedsters.  Don't ask!

YES!!!

Jack that is awesome!!    I try to fool them too it works 99% of the time.. I too go for the authentic look..  Hell I even use real parts.....

MANX ...........  I can tell you the house to the right IS NOT REAL EITHER!!

(was I right?)

BUT!!

Steve is correct  I just filled out my Application tonight (also ran to Macy's to pick up some Polo shirts, a fancy watch, and a pair of Sperry Topsiders).. you need to give them the VIN

And remember MR Nuckles,  I have logged thousands of hours driving the clown car for Ringling Bros. Circus..  So don't get any Ideas about taking over the wheel..................

Jack, you really shouldn't have posted this here.

Apparently, someone leaked it to the Democrat-Gazette and the PCA membership director is being brought up on charges. Malfeasance in office and disloyalty.

They're making him turn in all of his Porsche logo hats, polo shirts, and nylon jackets.

This is something of a big deal. When they scrub out a club officeholder, everyone has to learn a new secret handshake.

Luckily, he's got a pretty shrewd lawyer. They cut a deal letting him keep the topsiders and the Tommy Bahama bronzing gel.

I have been part of and around this club for many years.  I left many members following a few with a personal agenda ... to say nothing of the language and inuendos both personal and general.  I  do occasionally look in to see what is happening.  This is the first in many years I have felt the need to interject a comment.  The poor attitude towards PCA is a sign of ignorance and sad self-image.  I am a PCA member and I find that most are quality people who will accept you for who/what you are if you leave the attitude somewhere else.  I currently have among my cars a newer Carrera 911, Cayman S, 911 turbo, 356 B coupe and, my favorite, the VS Speedster.  I have shown the Speedster at numerous Porsche shows and found wide acceptance.  I will attach pictures.  It has won "People's Choice" in three Porsche shows.  I call it the ILLUSION and have made it as authentic as possible but NEVER show it as a "original Porsche".  Look over the photos and carefully read the plaque I put in the window and you will see that to take any of our cars too seriously is sign of poor grace and a cause of your own personal angst.  Please enjoy your cars and worry not what others may say about them.  If I am approached by a nay-sayer  I usually ask "OK, What is in YOUR garage?"

  • Radio: Just a cover over the CD/AM/FM unit
  • valve covers: Custom valve covers just to complete the ILLUSION
  • VIN & color plates: another touch for authenticity. Great fun to then tell observers it is a "replica". Most don't want to believe it.
  • Show Plate: Read out loud it makes more sense. Anyone over 25 gets the joke and enjoys a good laugh.

It seems whenever we go off on the PCA stereotype, people are quick to point out they know PCA members who aren't like that at all. I too have met lots of PCA members who are cordial, regular guys - more interested in you than in what you drive.

But there are usually reasons why most stereotypes persist.

At the gatherings of the faithful I've been to, there always seem to be a few with that attitude I think we've all seen. The one that keeps the stereotype alive.

Maybe they're to be pitied more than ridiculed, but they're out there and maybe giving the PCA an undeserved rap. In my book though, an organization that requires ownership rather than a mere interest in a car (or in anything else) is probably not one I'd want to support.

I have a PCA member grill badge given to me by the President of the central Illinois chapter. He used to own a very nice VS himself.

I don't have it on the car, but I appreciated the validation of the little Speedy as a reasonably faithful replica of an original,  and the kindness he exhibited by giving the badge to me.

He gained nothing by giving me the badge except my gratitude for the gesture

I only got 50% of the plaque references. But enjoyed 100% of them.
