Spyderowners.com still lists Classic Roadsters Limited as a producer of Spyder 550 replicars, but does anyone know if they are actually doing so? I corresponded with Martin Craven of that company over two years ago, about the time they were sorting out some final issues with their prototype and accepting orders for production cars, but our correspondence dried up pretty quickly when I asked for specific price and delivery information. Those are pretty basic details in making any sizable purchase, particularly for an overseas sale, but after going back to the well twice, I received no response.

CRL's design, which incorporates a well-triangulated space frame, wishbone suspension etc., was in my view far superior to that of other makers such as Beck or Vintage, but it is not clear whether CRL is producing these cars, or have sold any to U.S. customers. Their website appears not to have been updated in several years, and barely mentions the Spyder 550. I would be interested in any information anyone might have.

Hi Peter,
I e-mailed and spoke with Martin craven on several occasions a couple of years ago and he kindly sent several photos of their cars, and specifically the 550.
Although I will have one at some stage, the arrival of baby number three showed that I have been gaining pleasure in other areas of my life that currently restrict the finance and time to buy the car !
CRL were the sole UK importers for these cars, as manufactured in Germany by.
I found Martin to be a real enthusiast, who clearly new the product and the market. He also offered to arrange a trip to the factory to meet the team and gave me some dates when the factopry have their open days and meet and greet sessions.
I had correspondence with him again in January 2008, when I asked for an update of the 550 project. Quoted:

"No further news re the 550 at the moment but it is progressing - the Mercedes Gullwing has rather taken over the factory at the moment as well as the move of the Cobra manufacturing line from the UK to Riesa!!

The website is due for a complete revamp fairly soon so keep checking. "

I hope this helps. I confess I haven't been in touch again but have lots of documents, pices, photos etc from Martin, if you wants them.

best wishes
MARTIN ASHLEY (MANCHESTER UK)
Thank you for the information, Martin. It sounds as though CRL has shifted its priorities since I last corresponded with Martin Craven, and that their focus is on other vehicles at present. I appreciate your kind offer to send pictures, but I believe I still have the pictures of their prototype that Martin send me a couple of years ago. I recall that the German manufacturer of CRL's cars is Mohr.

I believe CRL is definitely on to something with their Spyder concept, so feel free to send me any updates regarding the car's development.

Best regards,

Peter
