Jen, go to an auto parts store and buy a medium size fire extinguisher...These are a must for any car new and old...
No car should be without one and when I was looking at the guage on the one in MR356 I noticed it was almost on the red line, probably old and tired from never being used....if you are not carrying one in your other cars, buy one for each of your cars....
I carry one in each of mine....I even have a small one for the Harley
Blake and Jen,
I'm sure you know this already but a typical fire extinguisher will not work on an engine fire.
Make sure you get either Halon or Halotron. Halon is not as readily available unless you get the reformulated 1211 halon.
Neither is very cheap (around $80.00). If you have a hard time locating them try here: http://www.356car.org/marketplace.html
Make sure you have full replacement coverage on your speedster. That's the smartest way to protect your car in case of a fire.
Just ask Mike McSween (17miledrive).
You can have my pin as well, if you'd like.
TERRY AND VINCE
A FIRE EXTINQUISHER IS UESLESS. AINT NO WAY TO STOP A FIBERGLASS FIRE,
I HAVE SEEN TO MANY AT A LAKE. THATS WHY YA GOT INSURANCE. JUST RUN YOUR ASS AWAY FROM THAT CAR IF IT CATCHES FIRE AND DREAM OF THE NEW YA CAN BUILD.

PS I BET THE PERCENTAGE OF FIRES ON A REPRO VS A REAL VW IS TINNNNY

I do think it's a good idea to have a fire extinguisher on board. You still have that remote chance you can put the fire out before it takes over. Just make sure it's mounted at a location you can get to in a hurry. And I'm sure you'll gain a few brownie points with the insurance company.
But if you're really set on saving your car you should invest in an onboard fire suppression system like Paul Harford has on Butch.
