Is there a way to find a VS car's history?

I would like to get info from VS about the build of a speedster. Can this be done by the VIN or are there any stamped numbers that VS puts on their cars and can be used to trace back to VS for manufacturing details?

Would like to know it the car I am looking at is build original or modified after purchase.

There was discussion some time back that VS didn't keep details of a build on hand....this may have changed through. Give Kirk or Mary a call at VS and inquire.

They use the donor car's VIN. For the car's history maybe Carfax could help but for the build details at VS it's another story. If you can post some detailed photos of the car maybe we could help you decipher what's original and what's not (if any).

I've asked Kirk this same question 2 weeks ago. He doesn't track his builds by VIN, you need the original owners name for him to document the build.

What I do have is the car's ViN - which is also stamped on the car somewhere - I assume it's a VIN plate placed on the car when 1st registered.

By tomorrow - if all goes well, I will be a VS owner! :) So I will be chiming in for advice! Thanks everyone!

Del Vin stamp is located under the carpet, just fwd of the rear seat area on the top of the center tunnel...with the third digit being the VW donor year.

Unless CARFAX has changed recently, you must have a 17 digit VIN to use it. Older VINs from donor cars should be short. I believe it was standardized to 17 digits around 1981?

Sometimes individual states record a car's history irregardless of the # of digits in the VIN. So if you happen to know the car lived in a particular state, you could query that state and possibly get information. Possibly.

For the record - don't bother if the state is NJ... They were most unhelpful with Steve's 1980 cabby.

I will be inspecting the vehicle tomorrow. Aside from the usual visual and engine run/test, is there anything I should look for to make sure it is not a 'lemon' per say? Like the door hinges, door seals, etc.?

I had the same questions about the 2002 VS I bought in March. VS provided me very little useful information about the history of the car, even though I provided the VIN and original owner's name. A copy of the build sheet was out of the question.

Best to move that fuel filter out of the engine compartment and relocate it to foward of the bulkhead away from possible ignition sources.

Yup, that fuel filter is a disaster waiting to happen. Make that prioriy #1. Nice looking Speedy!

Can you tell what kind of carbs they are from the pic?

Those are the standard issue Kadrons; good carbs but more often than not they need tweaking and/or jetting to get them running asd they should.
