I pretty well have everything back on my engine, including the old stock carb.

Sitting there staring at the engine I realized I hate that old carb.  Everything else is painted or new-except for that old grubby carb.

It had to go.

I read somewhere that you can take a stock carb and intake manifold off a type 1 air cooled engine without taking off the shroud or generator.

Not true.  The heat risers are in the way.

Damn.

I've already had to take the shroud out three times for various reasons and I didn't want to take it out again.

So I put a cutting wheel on my portable grinder and cut off one of the heat risers, which allowed me to easily remove the intake manifold.

There's no going back now.

For a carb replacement I had three options:

1.  A rebuilt stock German carb (except I'd need a new manifold)

2.  A set of dual single throat carbs

3.  A set of dual 40 Webers

After emailing John, a Aircooled.net, my three choices and engine particulars he recommended going with the 40 Webers, since there is a good chance I'll upgrade the engine somewhere down the road.

I plan on buying the Webers from John, because he can set them up to run properly on my stock engine.

Be very cautious as you start this project to protect yourself from the dreaded and expensive thought process of:

"While I've got it (choose one)

  • torn down"
  • with the engine out"
  • so I have access to ......"

Any one or more of these thoughts can lead to lost driving time, drained financial assets, and strained spousal relationships, not to mention wear and tear on your body and mind as you move through the process of succumbing to your urges.

I started by replacing a front trans mount, requiring me to separate the engine and trans. I fell victim to the second two thoughts above.

That led me to:

  • New Rear trans mounts
  • New Axle boots
  • New Thinline sump
  • New exhaust
  • Rerouting oil lines
  • Relocating fuel filter out of the engine bay.
  • Swapping out trans midmount.
  • Fabricating new cooling tins.
  • All new fuel lines
  • New floats in the Dell 40's
  • New ground strap
  • New engine bay seals
  • New gaskets and seals for the engine bay grille and the front horn grilles.
  • New fasteners, clamps etc. all over the car.
  • New pedal covers
  • Fresh Redline trans oil, Brad Penn 20-50 (way ahead of normal maintenance schedule)

All because I didn't control my urges when I thought:

"While I've got it with the engine out so I have access to..........."

Probably 80% of the stuff I did wasn't really necessary.

My name is Bob and I have the madness.

Here is a business model for you.........

An itinerant experienced Subaru mechanic who travels the country with an inventory of Subaru engines and comes to your house an installs the engine of your choice right in your garage. You provide room and board and pay a modest hourly rate and the cost of the engine and parts.

He gets to keep your A/C engine which he tears down and sells the good german parts to those of us firmly rooted in the technology of the middle of the last century.

He drives a New MX5.

One can only wish............

Yes, the madness is strong in me.

I took the body off to sand down and paint the pan.  While there was easy access to everything I ended up doing:

-all new brake lines (bending the long front to back line wasn't fun)

-new master brake cylinder

-new shocks-front and back

-new sway bars-front and back

-new ball joints

-new tie rods

-new disc brake kits-front and back

-new rear engine seal

-new clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing

-new tires

-new pedal assembly

-new PRP suspension seats and seat bases

......and I haven't even started on the body yet.

I have found the Carlisle (or west coast gathering) raffle a great place to get rid of unwanted/no-longer-needed excess parts, tools, you name it.  The giver is happy to be rid of it, the recipient is happy to get it (if for no other reason than to donate it for next year's raffle) and the raffle organizers make a few bucks to keep the event going next year.

Like a perfect storm......

I have a brand new clutch cable that I will be bringing.  I assume it's a generic one, but it was for my previous IM Speedster.  I'll see what else I can find...

I have a bunch of Tungsten P45T bulbs do those count?  I also have unused older H4 in original ... I mean Patina boxes too Since this looks like it might be my first Carlisle please advise if I am on par.

If this is your first visit, as a newbie, you're required to donate some Technomagnessio or other like valued wheels.

I've got a few things left over from my build I know I won't use...

Few turn signal levers, set of Kadron 40mm with intake manifolds (jetted for 1915cc and tuned by LowBugget), and some other things...
