Well after going back and forth the last couple of years, I finally pulled the trigger on a new build. My current car will be headed back to Bremen for sale, so if you are looking for a very well sorted Raby powered merlot speedster let me know. Specs of new build will be shared but at a hight level it will be stone gray with a black top, still working out the interior color. Yes it will be Suby powered and have discs all around. For reference this is my inspiration.

I love that color, believe it was dale bates bought IM close color(VW mouse brown?) and his interior was "salmon"and didnt think i would like it but it was gorgeous..the bright red just doesnt match for me.
Love the classic stone grey! I too saw with salmon interior - it is perfect match! (Was it Dale's at Alan's Pumpkin run years ago?)
Does anyone have a picture of Dale's car? The interior leather color is going to make me nuts. Agreed the red interior does not work, however I like the oatmeal carpet.
Dale's (second) car was a Maus Grey "D" with a Audi 1.8. This one is Stone Gray, like Scott Sloan's iconic IM-- but the vibe is totally different.
Good for you, Joe! None of us are getting any younger.
Stone grey with salmon interior at 2009 Pumpkin Run - Jim Chichi. Was he from NJ or PA? Wish I had photo of interior.

Stan is this Scott's car?

Joe---congrats---you are going to have a fantastic car. Suby powered too--excellent.
maybe contact IM, sure Henry has pics of salmon color, maybe Dales
The stone gray speedster, was my friend Jim Chichi's from Palmyra, Pa. Jim has since sold it to a fellow in Oklahoma. That is my former meissen blue VS, also pictured.
DON'T CONTACT HENRY
He's busy finishing my car...
Here are the pics of Dale's car - The Mouse. The interior is Tomato.

Sorry, there is no good interior shot here. I'll look around more.

More shots, including interior.
I didn't do a research degree for nuttin'.
Thanks Bob, this is huge help. If anyone has ideas for leather please send them my way.
Well, I have some ideas for leather, but we'd have to get Vince back on here...
Just plagiarize Scott Sloan's car and you will be the envy of all your friends. But be a complete heretic and do suby power with hidden stereo. Oh, maybe even hidden A/C. Just trying to start the debate over the quintessential speedy replica.
Phil why do you think I said specs to follow . Here are a few tidbits; no AC, yes on heated seats, hydraulic clutch, vintage speed shifter, bluetooth hidden receiver for stereo, cup holders, bumper overriders, possibly (hidden) heat ducts. With any luck wilwood brakes and Coddington knock off wheels. And yes it will have bee hives.
Alcantara is the way to go for interior. Leather is nice in a coupe but too hard to maintain in an open car.
Go with A/C just in case you tire of it down the road --- need A/C in FL.
Joe- think really hard about including a 5 speed; you'll be so glad you did!

Greg, I really like you... but again we disagree on everything in this post. Sorry man.
Leather. No A/C.
Thanks for the suggestion Al, I ask Carey if it is feasible.
Wolfgang I have Alcantara in my A5 and love it, even in black but will stick with leather.
Rudge type wheels as well, Joey?
Leather, leather, leather all the way,
So sensuous, so smooth, so soft, so enticing...
Seriously, a real sports car has a leather interior - none of that fake stuff.
Rudge type wheels as well, Joey?
That's the plan Bob.
AC for sure... even with the top down, Vintage floor AC and panel AC is really nice to have. Ray

It's certainly feasable, Joe. While not cheap, every guy I know in the VW world that has put a 5 speed in his car says it it's of the magnitude of going from a 1600 with a mild cam and dual kadrons or ict's to 2 liter or larger with Webers or Del's and ported big valve heads. No one would go back to a 4 speed. Now's the time to do it.

The Rancho trans/suby power in my spyder seems to work awesome and I haven't had the need yet for a 5th gear. but haven't been highway cruising yet. That suby power though is intoxicating in these little cars!
There is always the pricey 901 or 915 Porsche 5 speeds. I think standard gearing with a 4-speed and 3.44 would be fine with a suby. What are ratios of Carey's suby setup 4-speed? Would love to plug them into a mph calculator and see how they differ from standard gearing and a 3.44 R&P.
Since we are on this topic:
Regarding the 5 speed, etc. There's ALWAYS a way. It's really a matter of how much time and treasure it's worth to you.
IMHO, it's worth a lot. I argued for years that a properly geared VW 4-speed could be made to be every bit as wonderful as a 5-speed in this application. I was apparently smoking something at the time. A 4-speed can be made to be perfectly adequate. I'm thinking once you've rounded the bend into the surreal, "perfectly adequate" is not the descriptor a guy is looking for.
A Berg 5-speed or a Porsche 901 can be made to fit reasonably easily, a 915 with more difficulty. A 915 with a WEVO shifter can handle a WRX motor. Any of these transaxles are worth whatever hoops need to be jumped through to get to it.
Don't be like stupid-Stan. I've spent many, many thousands of dollars on a custom geared, 3.44 equipped, ZF LSD equipped VW transaxle built on an AL Rhino case, and shifted with a Vintage Speed shifter. I've got 915 money in a VW IRS trans, just like I've got Raby Type 4 money in a 2276 Type 1. Follow Joel Schlotz's advice and pony up the first time.
Buy once, cry once.
Stan that comment is priceless. Concepts are just that... concepts, Experience is the teacher, and sometimes you go all around and then you find out the truth which obviously you cannot DOWNLOAD into your kids or friends even. I guess the truth of the matter is YOU WILL PAY TO LEARN EVERYTHING, there are no exceptions. Ray
Joe, congrats on the new project.
Stan is right, if you want a 5 speed, go 901 or 915. A 901 is almost as strong except 1st. If you don't do drag-race starts, either one will last forever.

It's taken me way too long to admit it, and I hate it but it's true:
A man doesn't always get what he pays for, but he always pays for what he gets.
Always.
