...at Roebling Road Raceway.  Good friends, fast cars, and perfect conditions (70s and sunny).  My car is #42, which you won't see in a track photo as It's tough to do that while you're driving.DSC_0034DSC_0036DSC_0038DSC_0046DSC_0064DSC_0067DSC_0072DSC_0073DSC_0074DSC_0075DSC_0080DSC_0082DSC_0086DSC_0090DSC_0095DSC_0103DSC_0105DSC_0106DSC_0109DSC_0110DSC_0111DSC_0113DSC_0114DSC_0117DSC_0127DSC_0130DSC_0132DSC_0133DSC_0148DSC_0153DSC_0159

I wish I had pictures of all of the cars.  I got three ride-alongs that were fun.

  1. A Fiat 500 Abarth.  This guy is a solo-novice like me but is several seconds quicker.  The car is a hoot and surprisingly quick, but the seats are slippery and there aren't any handholds.  I was stiff for two days from trying to brace myself for 20 minutes.
  2. The white track-prepared Boss 302 Mustang.  The driver is one of our instructors and a friend from Cars and Coffee.  He and the car are both fast and the car sounds incredible!
  3. A 650HP Viper GTS Coupe with some serious mods.  The driver is very skilled and we set a lap time of 1:22.02 with a top speed of 151!  Holy CARP!

My best lap was a 1:35.75 with a top speed of 115.7.  Sigh...

WOW!  Not just one Falcon Futura, but TWO!  There must have been a bunch down in the southeast as they keep popping up at shows and tracks.  Hardly ever see one up here in New England, any more.  The later ones could be had with either a 289, 351C or a 390 and were seriously quick and really decent road course cars - quite nicely balanced.  I seem to remember a picture of Paul Newman in one early on.

American Motors brought out the SC Rambler (also with a 390 engine and beefy suspension mods) to compete with the Falcon but then Ford dropped the Falcon entirely a year later.

I'll admit to not being much of a muscle car guy, but those late Falcons and the '71 Mustang Mach 1 were my two favorites.  If you couldn't afford a DeTomaso Pantera (even when the dealers were practically giving them away, just to get rid of them) then a Mach 1 came in a very close second (and probably several seconds quicker).

Roebling road is tricky for a swing-arm (SA) Speedster.  For the most part, the track is quite flat with only two turns even remotely banked (and then not much).  One turn is something like 120 degrees (that bowl over in the back corner, Lane) and flat, flat.  One of the other (SA) Speedsters in the Beaufort club took a few laps and it was a handful when he hit the corners (although he really didn't expect the rear weight shift in our cars and that scared him).  A SA speedster with beefy sway bar and a camber compensator might be a lot of fun there, but none of the other cars in the club had those mods.  My IRS Speedster (19mm anti-sway bars front and rear and the Koni shocks set on medium-firm) did well there in the turns, mostly understeering until lots of power was applied and then switching to neutral.  It's a really nice track and perfect for a club track day.  Even better when the Taco Truck shows up!

Nice shots, Lane!
