I am enjoying the classic speedster experience........I took a nice twighlight drive to my favorite twisty mountain road and starting up the hill,brrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....a bogging ,dead engine,no mechanical noises, oil up to level ,fan belt fine,......I was taken out by the ONLY electronic part on this damn car!!! THE COMPU-FIRE ignition!!! Argghhhh

My bus suffered the same fate last year, but it was only acting up with rough running, etc.,but this one just crapped out....last year my EMPI crap fuel pump made in Taiwan stranded me,but I was able to swap that out in a parking lot,but this required a $200.00 tow!!!

There are 3 electronic ignitions out there...

1. Compu-fire

2. Pertronix

3.EMPI

I heard the EMPI one is awful and craps out in a week, the Pertronix and Compufire both have their fans and I guess are comparable, this one lasted 17K miles or so......but I do have to say,all this "stuff" for our cars is just not made up to modern OEM style standards or reliability!

I was very close to getting points, but I do rev this motor to 6k+ and want the electronic ignition performance.

From now on,I WILL carry a SPARE electronic module and a flashlight and the tools to change it,since thsi would have been a 15 minute roadside repair!!

It cracks me up that modern cars are purely electronic, however the ONE thing on my Westy and this speedster have both let me down!!!

You've failed to look outside the box. It was routine for us back in the '80's while using Subaru EA81 engines in airplanes to put two electronic modules into one distributor to give separate sparks to two coils, then joined sending a spark to each plug. Take it easy on yourself and have a look at the Megajolt website. Ford EDIS parts, dirt cheap, reliable. Is Ford reliable enough?

Thanks for the tips you guys,I did install the Bosch blue "resistor" coil. There are 2 different "blue" coils and the PO had one in there with NO resistance and I replaced it with teh lighter-blue resistor version knowing this can damage the pickup......

I was planning some nice "daddy time" with a cool drive and then a nice IPA at the end of the road,BUT I ended up sitting on the side of the road, but I do have to admit it was in beautiful jungle/forest and there was a stream gurgling and very nice people letting me blcok their driveway with my car for over an hour waiting for the towtruck,it could have been worse!

I like the backup DIS distributor/ignition coil thing, but I will take my chances with carrying a spare,I figure the next one will last me another 2-5 years or so (crosses fingers)

Alan, that is a excellent idea...but these electronic ignitions are so easy to put in,I just installed a Pertronix unit (and will keep a spare compu-fire in the car)and it literally took 15 minutes, and this included re-timing the engine!!

When first I posted about this I had not fixed the car yet, however I KNEW it was this damn ignition problem,if not it would have been the coil, and sure enough.....it WAS the module!

And to add to what Alan said, if you have an extra distributor clamp, you can drop it right in all timed perfectly!

I put over 100,000 miles on a Pertronix in a '77 Scirocco back in the early eighties. That was when it was still called a Perlux Ignitor, and before all the rice-boys started putting fart-cans on their Hondas. When I initially installed it, it was rubbing slightly on the magnet ring. That one lasted only about 100 miles. Replaced that and forgot about it, even though I left the points and a screwdriver in the glovebox for a while.

I started out with a Pertronix I which was great...then Upgraded to a Pert.II w/ matching FlameThrower coil. Had some issues with it and it finally smoked on me in Maryland. Had the Pert.I with me and changed it over on the side of the road and it took me the whole way home. Contacted Pertronix and they replaced the Pert.II module after it was deemed faulty. I upgraded again with a Pert.II dizzy and like it a lot as I can control advance curves. 15,000 miles on it so far. I keep the removed PertII unit with me as a spare. The only thing I would do further is put an EDIS system in like Danny uses...really impressed with that set-up!
