OK, cool your jets guys.

This one's a 420mm, nothing wrong with that except I'm 6' 2" and the 400mm (Flat Four banjo) wheel my car currently has is at the limit of my comfort zone.

I picked up a 400mm from Chung and found a steering column and shaft on the 356 Registry so this summer at some point, I'm going to have a "real" wheel, finally!

I've heard some of you talking about how the 2 spoke is flimsy, I can't describe how strong these both are. My Flat Four easily bows and bends but these are bomb-proof, Chung must've put massive rods in them. Try as I have, I can't get them to deflect at all.

It's nice to know that you all were so concerned about me and my wheel!

@will hesch

How was your experience dealing w/ Chung?

I have been curious to pick up one of his 400mm wheels.   I'm just hunting down a pre-57 VW 24 spline shaft. Not easy to find a decent one.

... i'm such a steering wheel wore!

@Alan Merklin. How does a 1" D shaft U adaptor work? Does it convert from a 57- '67 1/2 spline patern to a pre- '57.

Sorry for asking, i'm just not familiar with them? I thought my only option was to change the steering shaft.

Many thanks!

I absolutely love this steering wheel.  That said, I'm confused.  The wheel in my speedster is a 14" (355mm) wooden nardi knock-off, and let's just say I won't win a LeMans style start with this wheel.  I'm only 6'-0", but I guess it's mostly legs.  How are all of you able to get in "easily" with a 400mm (15 3/4"dia) wheel or larger?

If you're all legs you should fit fine. The further back in the car/seat you are the better.

That being said if you go with a thicker adapter, say a 3/4" one, it'll move the steering wheel back a little bit and it'll raise the steering wheel slightly since the shaft is at an angle. The closer the steering wheel is to you the higher it'll be, ever so slightly, but higher. So even though the steering wheel is a little larger the angle of the shaft and the thickness of the adapter will pretty much keep the bottom of the wheel the same as it was before.

SF, it's all in how you approach your girl.

I first tried sitting-legs out, getting my long (I'm 6' 2") right leg in (think watusi), then grabbing my left leg and forcing in in a very unnatural way, into the car. This method looked and felt awkward and resulted in Advil dependency.

Now I simply swing open the door, right hand goes to the top of the seat-back, and I jump in, both feet first, then sit, hopefully on the seat, too much momentum and the gearshift knob goes places nothing should ever go.

My Flat Four banjo (wiggly little thing that it is) fits me fine.

Ask Teby how he likes his (real) VDM wheel...
