As far as I know, the SOC has always been about sharing whether or not members were paying or not paying.  I think it was just since the upgrade that some areas could only be accessed by Supporting Members.

As far as where the membership money goes, Theron funnels all the cash to Gerd who launders it through a Cayman Islands bank account.  Then the money gets distributed to the top 10 posters based on their "Activity Points" score.  I'm number 11, so I haven't seen a dime.
