I'm still learning how to post pictures
This site needs a "Like" button.
I know a picture is worth a thousand words - but would like to hear details. Is that a Subbie trans (auto or 5 spd)? Had to look Weston, FL --- not close to me, darn.
A Jake Raby Subie, DANG, that thing is going to FLY!!! Nice!
Raising the bar...
TRahn, you've mastered the posting pictures part, now we need to work on focus, OR is that Carey's lesson for the day?
A jake Raby suby in a Beck... YES PLEASE and Twice on Sunday
Hey, Todd, that's Jake with a big J. Get with the program!
Pictures I'm posting are all coming from Carey...
The engine is a stock 2.5 L Subaru with about 100,000 miles on it. Jakes team took it apart and rebuilt it to spec and it showed about 176 HP on their dyno.

The transaxel is a four speed type one VW case custom built with gearing to match the Subaru power band. Carey tells me it is built with the best VW racing parts available, Phoenix gear set, HD dual side plates, HD throw out bearing carrier, FAG main bearing, HD shift forks. It is built to handle the power of a WRX turbo motor.
Pictures show the motor.... before and after.............

Until I can afford his motor...he is little j!
Looks great. Almost makes me want to keep my Speedster and get a new engine.
Looks amazing!! Just talked to Jake on the phone today...he's an incredible guy.
Enjoy it!
Here it is on the Raby Engine Development dyno. The best part is that it doesn't sound like a Subaru, and thats not because of the exhaust!
Definitely sounds good on the dynamo! Nice fit into Beck engine bay --- since they don't have the intrusive double "fire wall" like CMC/FF.
I know someone who's an "Ace" with a Dremel who could take care of that firewall in mere seconds. I'm jus' sayin........
I personally LOVE the sound of the subie motor. Sounds alot like a VW but with large balls.
I'm really looking forward to the SAS having that sound with equal length headers....burble burble burble bap bap bap
Jake is like god..I have a type 2 shrine with pics of Jake all over wall with voodoo stuff, lizard heads and beads
This sounds like a Raby engine, not a Suby, VW or Porsche. We have altered the internals to promote engine output, power band and sound.
That's WICKED sounding. I can't compare to anything I've heard...maybe some kind of jet
Dare I ask exactly what you did to negate that subie boxer rumble?
I'm a huge subie fan..had many...sti..wrx's..gt. I live in TAHOE. Someone once said it's the Subaru capital of the western world. If you drive around and observe 1 out of 5 cars is a subie
When my SAS is delivered it's going to be like having my first child..
I hate that rumble. It took us about 2.5 years of development to understand what creates it fully and how to manipulate the engine in beneficial ways while eliminating it.
I really like the way a Raby motor sounds. Someday I tell you. Either in my speedster or in a 550 Spyder from the Hines bros...
Erm... Just FYI Todd, the Hines' are father and son, not brothers. I'm sure Kevin likes the thought, though
I'm done...just done. I never get anything right on this site for god sakes. Sorry mr Hines and son. Still love your cars though! Damnit...
Looks like we will be waiting several more days for the custom header to show up, but it is done and in route at least. Normally we just fab our own, but we are trying something different with this one due to some of the extra work done by Jake and Co. With any luck she'll be fired up on Monday.
We have built a LOT of Subaru powered cars now, and I can tell you that no matter what exhaust, what tune, or what bolt-ons are added, NOTHING sounds like a JR Suby motor, period. It has a lot more to do with Jake's internal work than anything else. I actually do know the secret, but I ain't telling...
Todd: no worries, it actually happens so often I don't even correct people anymore.
oh, and WRT pictures, yes I am usually the "photog" and keep in mind that I am also "hands on" in the shop, so many of these are snapped on my iPhone while covered in gas/oil/grease/whatever. In addition they are also generally counterproductive (i.e. "hey guys, let go of that part for a second and step back so I can snap a pic") so they are as good as it gets...
That said, it is something I have been doing for a few years now and the clients seem to really appreciate getting full weekly updates with photos. In fact many (if not all) tell me how excited they are for Friday updates to hit their inbox.
Alright, enough playing on the interwebs for me, gotta get back to work...
Sorry for the "focus" criticism (just jokin'), buddy, I know you have your priorities straight
OK...OK...everybody back to work.....Carlisle is just around the corner!!!! Carey will be delivering her to the infield on Friday.
Rich, no offense taken and I know you were only kidding around. Rereading my post it does sound a bit defensive but wasn't intended that way at all.
Only a few more e-mails to answer and I can get back to the dirty work...

Using pictures to keep purchasers updated works so well. At least it does for guys like Carey and I who stay on or ahead of schedule without excuses! The other guys don't want to show their progress because it'll prove that they aren't even working on the car that they say they will be "finished next week" :-)
I have found that using facebook to share and host photos is both quick and effective, so I keep all my purchasers up to date there and they love it, because they don't have to be fb users to see the pics.
The way that we have internally altered the engine wasn't done only to change sound; in fact the sound was a byproduct of the efficiency that we gained and we really just happened upon it in the beginning and then decided to capitalize on it.
Typically the engine that we based Tom's from makes a real 150HP on my engine dyno, this one made 176 average peak power and touched 178 a couple of times. We did not alter the displacement at all, the added power only came from some added engine intelligence and some proprietary head/ cam/CR work. His engine is no where near its full potential as he wanted to keep things simple and I share that same desire with him, because ultimately the simplest way is by far the most intelligent way.
I am almost ready to share the results of my JR28 development as we have already been taking orders for them with their huge LN Engineering Nikisil bores that are proprietary to our program only.
Here's a sneak peek of a 270HP N/A beast with a rev range to 9K that runs on pump gas and has mannerisms on the street that will blow you away.

Ok, I think I need a moment. Droooooooooooooooool.
Maybe one of these days.
Lane, you can do anything you put your mind to . Jake, you have my attention too.
The only issue is generally people associate Suby transplants with "cheap alternatives". Trust that nothing we are doing with these engines is developed from that standpoint and that the least expensive Suby conversion that we create is more expensive than any of our standard aircooled engine offerings.
I just listened to the video and the sound of that engine is unlike most anything I'm used to hearing. Cross between a jet and I don't know what else.
Excellent!
So, what's something like that cost, in round numbers?
And, what do you mate it to tranny wise?
I'd love to know what old George Brown would have said about this engine...

We are biased toward the Subarugears transaxle package, so no adaptor plates are required and the entire drivetrain, to include the clutch, are all Subaru OEM. Adaptors to properly geared VW and Porsche transaxles that are optimized for the rev range of the Subaru engine are a possibility as well.
Cost? We don't really build the same engine twice and this sort of thing is not mass produced. Because of that I require a consultation to even give round figures. Lets just say that most will start at 12K minimum.
What would George Brown say? Well whatever it was, it wouldn't be positive. (unless of course he had decided to install one into something he owned, then it would be superior.)
He and I saw eye to eye on one occasion, and I must have been sick that day, or something.
You two used to have some spirited discussions, to say the least. As a bystander, it was always interesting waiting to see who would 'blow' the first!
Oh well, George is gone, and times are a changin', what with water cooled Speedsters now available. No more Type I versus Type IV arguments much any more.
has anyone put a suby motor in a Vintage Speedster? Does it fit?
Well Jake you quoted me $17k to start and needed minimum 6 months plus. Your engines enjoy an excellent reputation no doubt. Not sure who John Brown is.
George Brown. He was on this site a number of years ago, but passed away. He and Jake used to have good discussions about various aspects of engine design.
My apologies for whatever thread drift I caused here, but this discussion of Jake's engine just brought back a few memories.
George Brown knew everything about everything. You didn't even have to ask him, he would just tell you. The difference between Jake and GB is that Jake earned his stripes by actually building VW engines, while GB just talked about them. GB could get in a fight in an empty room.
