Vince,
The miata club is running up Friday morning (Socalm). I'm meeting them at Blackwell's Corner at 12:15pm. Though you probably envisioned running up with speedy/spydie people, I know the Miata group would greatly enjoy your lovely car and great company. They have several stop off/pickup people places planned enroute.

And yes, you are good company, I don't care what the other members say about you.
angela
Angela,
was originally planning on taking the coast heading north, but I can do that heading south on Saturday...The Miata club is taking a more direct route for sure.....I'll ride with them any day....
Roger Stanley, if you open Angela's post and see their route, it appears to be similar to the one you were planning on taking,
I will meet the group at the Wilshire Blvd location at 8:00AM..

Angela, thanks for the support concerning the SOC site, It really is a great site, I'm not much of a mechanic so I try to keep thigs interesting with my sense of humor, but it seems to get lost with most of this crowd....It appears most have bought into this politically correct, sanitized B.S. that has taken over the 21st century..
Vince,

I am up for a caravan up 101 if you still prefer that route. I have run with the Miata group, the road from Frazier Park to Taft is very twisty, pavement is very poor and they run very fast. 101 will be cooler and far less bugs. If I have not sold you yet, you can stare at my WWW's all the way up 101. Whada ya think?
FWIW, Dean drove his car to the small town of Famoso, on Hwy 99 (Hwy 5 did not exist at that time), just north of Bakersfield, turned west on Hwy 46, proceeding to Blackwell's Corner. He happened to spot Lance Reventlow's 300SL parked there at around 5:00 PM and stopped for a short chat. Reventlow was also on his way to the races at Salinas, as was Dean. Sometime between 5:40 and 5:50 that Friday afternoon on September 30, 1955, Dean plowed into a car driven by a 23-year-old student named Donald Turnipseed at the interesection of Hwys 41 and 46. Excellent book (James Dean...a biography) by John Howlett says it all.

See you on Friday.
Dear Vince, Dan, Anyone,

Do to a cold I am planning on driving up 101 route on Friday. I will leave San Dimas about 9am and travel the 210 to the 134 to the 101 and then up to Paso Robles. I need to check in to the Holiday Inn Express in Paso Robles before 3PM and the go on to the Festivities at the Jack Ranch Diner in Cholame.

If anyone is wanting to caravan up with me please advise. Weather permitting I will be driving my Vintage Black Speedster (SPDE356).

Well folks after I made motel reservations, started this string, telephoned the Jack Ranch Diner about plans and etc., I received a wedding invitation to one of my closest friend's daughter's wedding (Ive known the father and mother of the bride for about 44 years). The scheduled festivities have forced me to cancel my plans to go to Cholame for the week-end.

However I would enjoy caravaning, for a few miles with those who are heading up as a "pack". Maybe we could even plan on having lunch as a group somewhere. I'll try to get a couple of the other Valley Guys to consider joining us. The White Oak Avenue meet-up (above) might work? Or, maybe the parking lot at the Balboa Park golf course (1/2 block north of the Hayevenhurst offramp)would be better, since at this point in the caravan nobody will need fuel.
My suggestion. Let's meet Friday Morning September 30th in the parking lot of the Sepulveda Basin / Balboa Golf Course parking lot.

Exit the 101 freeway at the second exit west of the 405 Fwy interchange. Turn right and immediately get in the left turn lane for Burbank Blvd. The entrance to the parking lot is about two hundred feet west on Bubank Blvd. There are restrooms here and there is a cafe where you can re-load your thermoses with coffee. At this point nobody should really need fuel.

For the rest of you guys, coordinate a meeting and departure from this location. I'll be in the parking lot from about 8:00AM until caravan time.

Dan, I spoke with Dennis Moore on the phone last night I think he wants to leave San Dimas around 9:00 AM. He wants to miss the commuter traffic. At 65 MPH it'll take forty five to fifty-five minutes to get to the meeting place from San Dimas. I think.

We'll wait for you guys. Call Vince's cell phone to give us updates.

I don't want to put my cell phone number on the website because I'm afraid JimBob will start harrassing me with hang-up calls and stuff. He seems so envious and angry about my winning ways (see anything goes "SOC Meltdown" "Post of the Week Award" bestowed on me by that old moderator TheRon).

Got a call from Dan, he is helping a friend evacuate from the fires which are currently burning in the area.....he probably will not make the cruise with us and may miss the whole event....
I was hoping to start a little earlier than 10:00 from the valley,
If Dennis leaves San Dimas at 8:30, we should be able to leave the golf course by 9:30.....what do you think
Made to Atascadero nice and safe! Meeting the Miata dudes at Blackwell Corner 12:15pm. See you guys @ Jack's Diner sometime after that. You know, I drove the Highway 1 from Frisco to Cambria. What a beautiful drive! When you guys see me tomorrow, ask me about the squirrel incident...

The Southern California contingent (or a part of it) paused briefly at the Balboa Lake Golf Course this AM on their way to Cholame for the James Dean 50th Event.

Mr. & Mrs. Vince Manto pulled in with their Creme VS to meet Bill George (Red Thunder Ranch) and John Leader (Gray JPS). Moments after I snapped this pic, Dennis Moore arrived, too, but driving his PT Cruiser Woody, not his VS (technical difficulties).

The Mantos and Dennis hit the 101 headed West and Bill George tagged along for a few miles. I had to go back to work.

Let me say the ash and smoke in the air from the huge Southern California fires was pretty amazing. After being parked for about 10 minutes, the cars were covered with ash. Looked like it was snowing. Unfortunately, the guys will drive right into the fire area on their way to Cholame. Cough, cough.

Vince called last night to up-date us. He said the Jack Ranch Diner was putting on a good celebration with lots of memorabilia for sale and a James Dean look alike impersonator posing for photos with some of the Spyders and Speedsters on hand. They re-enacted the fatal crash at the exact minute (add 50 years) that it happened with look alike vehicles.

The owner of the Jack Ranch Diner who goes by the email identity of "Susan Potlicker" told me months ago that she thought Saturday was going to be the big day. Apparently there will be car shows (both Hot Rods and Porsches, remember: "Rebel Without a Cause"). Vince mentioned he'd call again today with info. I will probably not be able to post 'til early AM tomorrow. I think Angela has a laptop with her maybe she can give us a bit more . . .
9/30/05.....5 a.m.

Made the drive up the 5 through Bakersfield and onto 46 west. Stopped at Blackwell's Corner for an apple and a coke. Then headed on to the intersection, paused and took a photo. Next, on to Cholame. After walking around and mingling with reporters, Dean look-a-likes, and Vic B. with his Spyder replica I departed at about 1 p.m. Headed west to Paso Robles and down Highway 1. My 2001 VS (1600 w/dual Kadrons)made it up and over the Grapevine, and down the coast at 65-75 all the way. The engine temp. was a tad higher on the return trip, since it was awful hot to Paso Robles and then over the pass to the coast north of Santa Barbara. 480 mile round trip. Arrived home at 6 p.m.
Boy o Boy, what a 24 hrs.....actually more like 36 or so....
First it was cold then it was snowing ash, then it got hot, I mean HOT....MR356 never missed a beat, could have sold it twice at the Jack ranch, for more than I paid 3 years ago...
The event was a little on the morbid side if you ask me...hundreds of people standing on this triangle piece of land in 90+ heat waiting to re-enact the accident that takes JD's life....There I was right in the middle....
The look-a-like James Dean was great, all the mannerisms, he was the highlight of the day...
Haven't seen that many spyders in a while....Good talking to all the SOC guys, I will share a few stories in the next few days, and show a few pic's.....Spent the evening at Big Bubba's Bad BBQ...in Paso Robles....Great Scotch.. young broads riding a bull....
Then on the the hotel for an XXX rated movie....
Life is good....
A good forty eight hours..A nice run to Chlame in the moring Friday, stopped to see friends on the way who live on the other side of fresno, an hour away, and got to Jack Ranch a little early, not many speedsters or spyders around, but lots of rods and customs. The music was too loud, even while the ears were coming down from the not quiet exhaust and the wind. Before long a lot more cars and some of the old guys in the socalm club a miatas from the south land, I drove a miata for a few years and marketed a cupholder for them, but it seems no one had one in the car....where did all those cupholders go, alot of them. Talked to some dedicated hotrodders, and ran into a guy that we did a double take and asked each other where we knew each other from......a fellow woodie onwer who I have spoken to at Woodies on the wharf a time or too. He reminded me of the Woodie gathering in Morro Bay, Saturday morning, good, I'm headed that way. After a night of quiet in Cayucos, and catching up on my sleep, not a lot for the last couple of nights, thrashing on the speedster getting the new chassis under there and a new motor in the back, I made the Woodie gathering to see the old friends with questions as to why I would be driving a porsche instead of the woodie. Off across highway 41 again with a few stops to let the traffic run off ahead so I could get the car up to speed again. and a stop a Jack Ranch to talk again with a coule of porsche guys and only one speedster and one spyder. But the rods were out and they are good to talk to, too. Then the long straight run to Bakerfield to the Hot Rod reunion and the 250 mph front engine dragsters. caught up with the fresno guys there and toured the old race cars and the swap meet, didn't have room to bring home much so I didn't look too hard. and a push from the guys in the parking lot, in trade for my warm beer, I left the lights on, but hey, the AA/fuel dragsters were running when I pulled in....I hurried. A boring run up the 99 to fresno and got home just at dark. The new chassis ran great, the handling of the IRS rear, narrowed 1 1/2 inch per side was so much better than the old swing I just can't believe it....but everything front to back is new and that probably helped. whew, I'm tired, but it was worth it.

Ditto to Vince's comments. Very hot (100 degrees), but it didn't really feel that hot with a few cold ones under my belt. Got a chance finally meet Vince and Angela. Great people. Angela came all the way from Medford, Oregon to grace the whole shebang with her beautiful black 911-equipped Spyder. There were four other Spyders there on Friday (I didn't stay for Saturday's events).

The 50's-60's music was as cool as the rods and Speedsters that were also there. A guy who was almost a dead (oops...maybe a poor choice of words) ringer for James Dean got his picture taken with almost everyone. I don't know who set up the JD fest, but for being out in the middle of nowhere, they did an admirable job. There were more camera shutters being popped than fleas on a dog. The old experienced car-show salts brought chairs and large fold-up canopies to neutralize the effects of the sun, giving the show kind of a mini-carnival effect. All they needed was Shakey the clown and buku balloons.

Ray Armstrong also showed up with his ongoing project Speedster. The rest of you who failed to show missed out on a relaxed and fun time. I had been enjoying your posts for quite some time now and had hoped to shake a few more hands and chew some fat, but maybe next time.
I arrived 9/30 pretty early in the morning, around 9am. Was a bit put out that the entire memorial at Jack's diner was covered with large scale b/w pics of JD. The pics were great, but I never got close enough to read the stuff on the monument because of all the pics. Most of those got moved later in the day. Met up w/Ray and another fellow. We decided to blow the popsicle stand and go down to the crash site. The three of us bailed into the little triangle mentioned above and practically caused a traffic jam by just being there.

Then onto Blackwell's corner where I as meeting up with the Miata guys. Ray and the other lovely silver speedster (sorry, forget names - oldheimers) went also. You know Ray, always up for a drive! When the Miata club arrived, my arranged "surprise" started. Way back in April or May this year, Miata guy-Mitch asked if someone would take his dad for a ride in the spyder. It was a surprise for his dad -Tom. Well Tom was tickled pink with the ride and he was probably the best passenger I've ever had. He loved that ride like a fat kid loves cake. Tom was 16 when James Dean was killed and for him, that day was frozen in time. His son flew him out from Georgia and arranged this ride for him. Very cool.

The heat was really getting to me by about 4:30 or 5pm, so I headed back to the hotel. Saturday morning I left and drove thru Cholame and headed back up I-5. Most perfect morning for a drive. Left the spyder in Sacramento and hopped a plane to DC. Hope the spyder is still there when I get back Tuesday... Long walk from Sacramento to Medford.

You know, this has been a wonderful trip for me. Two days driving down the coast highway in a spyder with perfect weather the whole way. I met extroardinary people on the trip and at the event. Gave a charming southern gentleman a great fun surprise. You know, this trip is alot like life. We spend so much time worrying about the destination that we fail to remember that it is the journey and those we meet along the way who give meaning to the entire passage.
angela
Nice thoughts and observations Angela! Glad you had a great ride and sightseeing. I hope you just didn't park the Spyder in an airport lot!

Possibly could have left it at Ray's place. He isn't far from there!
Hope it works out!

Hopefully this week my friend from LaPine may be coming down later in the week with his new Solstice by Pontiac. He wants to do some touring, probably in the Applegate, you up for it if you will be back Wed -Friday?? Raining here now but will be better after this Monday!

Bruce
I'll be back in Medford Wednesday late afternoon. Friday/weekend sounds good to me. If Steve is really really nice to me (oh wait, he already is...) I might even "let" him drive!

And yes, I did leave it at the airport. Not in the airport parking, at the hotel parking for business travelers. You have to be a hotel guest to access the lot. Did a whole bunch of things to ensure it would not start and would not be pushed or rolled. Covered the interior with a plastic tonneau cover aka glad bags and put the cover on her. Sitting under a security camera in plain view of the lobby. If someone wants to steal the car, they will. But it won't be easy. Paid the parking in advance as well.

Hopefully see you this weekend. angela

Angela, I think you are my wife's new hero, when she learned about your trip from Medford in the spyder, and I told her about your motoring ability, and the squirrel story, and you "don't" look like Ray Armstrong, she was impressed.....(sorry Ray)
Ray, it was good spending time with you on Saturday...Thanks for the cool one...bud...
Barry, it was nice meeting you, wish the four of us could have spent more time together, perhaps in the future....and That beer hit the spot...(took about 30 seconds to finish it in that heat)
Roger, we need to plan an event, perhaps to lake arrowhead, did that trip last year, it was fun.....
Dennis, I was cussing you out in the heat of the day, I in my Vintage you in an air conditioned PT cruiser, you had to be picking up my vibes....Solvang on sunday was pretty cool...many custom cars,
on the streets.....Next time bring the "other" cool car....
Bill George, I'd like to say you missed out on a good time, and it was, but standing in the middle of nowhere in 100 degree heat milling around with a few hundred other dopes, is still a little puzzleing to me....
Vince, you took the words out of my mouth. I was so busy trying to keep my eyeballs in their sockets that I plumb forgot to keep you supplied with suds. One of the non-Dean reasons I wanted to attend was to sit in a Speedster just to get a feel for how I want my seats built. I was so enthralled with the whole experience that I forgot that too. Next time I will just tape a checklist to my forehead. I missed seeing Bill George, but standing around in a dusty parking lot in 100 degree heat certainly can't beat a nice cool wedding, right, Bill? And Angela was as cool as her posts. Neat lady. She should have been given an award for having travelled the longest distance in a Spyder.
