NOT MINE. I've always liked the custom paint job on Janis' '59 356 D. This is rather cool VS based tribute. $49k so $20k paint job.

Janis' car was a cab. Here's what a 1/25 scale modeler did.
The real thing-
I took this at the Raleigh exhibit and found it interesting that the car had stick on belt trim.
Double fake.
Meaning what ?
Meaning if you look at the 356 being lugged around today and touted as Janis's car one has to wonder. When comparing the pictures of her posing on her car then looking at the one that is on display there looks to be many differences. Although these differences could be attributed to the car being restored but why would you mess with an original piece of art?
Meaning what ?
Fake number one: not Janice Joplin's car
Fake number two: not a real 356
Thanks Ron, I had no idea. Is it a replica cab? I never cared much for Janice's style or the style of her car actually. I grew up in the 60's but I wasn't a hippie, I was a hotrodder with a 427 Ford. Got drafted in 68 and that was the end of all of that for 2 years...

Not a replica. An "important" 356.
Occasionally, after the earth has traveled around the sun far enough, we'll all look at a picture of the Joplin Abomination and nod our heads. We'll discuss the finer points of this or that, as if it were something to aspire to. I think the point of the car (if there was one) was to shock the viewer, and display Ms Joplin's "art sensibility"... which corresponds in no way to mine.
I guess I'm a Cretin. This one does nuthin' for me, and never has.
Agreed, Stan. That paint job belongs on a '60s era Dodge van with flares, port hole side windows and a bumper sticker that reads " If this van's rockin' don't bother knockin'".
I've always been a Janis fan. I never inhaled though. Aren't many 22 year olds in 1968 that could afford a 3 year old $3500 Porsche and then paint it psychedelic. Her last recorded song "Mercedes Benz" was her statement of consumerism rejection - much like the psychedelic painting of the 356. A parchment white 356 wouldn't match her over the top style of rose colored wire glasses and ostrich feather bolas. Shame dead at only 27.
Seems kinda ridiculous now, but there were a lot of weirdly painted vehicles in the 60s.
I liked Janis and I like her car, but there should be only one.
How many Batmobiles are there?
....and along with the 'look-alikes' there's multiple Bonnie & Clyde shot up Ford sedans making the carnival circuits....but easy to spot since the bullet hole patterns don't match the photo of the authentic riddled car with Clyde slumped in the driver's seat.
