Jerry,
If you don't have a relay for your headlights, I would suggest you put one in now.

I'll second for the relay if not, the switch will get way too hot and you'll be replacing yet another.
what type of relay and where would you put it?
Dan;
Here's a thread, with guys far more informed than me:

JPS has a relay already installed-- the headlight switch is a cheap $5 piece-it can be replaced with a Painless #80154 $47 or a duralast #sw1769 $33 both sold by summit racing
Try a NAPA switch.... I have been using them for some time. All the witch should be doing is sending a 12volt triggering signal to the relay (minimal load on the switch) and the 30 amp -low beam / 40 amp high beam relay is what actually carries the voltage load.
thanks guys- I went with Painless #80151 headlight switch and a Painless #80150 floor mount dimmer which I will mount just above my dead pedal.
Relays are the answer. The stuff from JPS are PoS. After the third one, I got one from Henry at IM, very nice, and works with the little black knob that is period correct, I suppose. Rewired with relays as part of the fix, one for low beams, one for high. Seems to be the solution.
Yeah, you know....if you have to pay over $100 for a real VW headlight switch or, alternatively, go to NAPA and get one for under $15 bucks, you might kinda think that, just maybe, the VW/German one is a little bit higher quality and might last a lot longer.
I'm using the original switch from my donor car, a 1969 VW sedan. Before I put it in my Speedster, I took it apart (it's easy to get open) and cleaned all of the sliding contacts with emory cloth and contact cleaner, then put it back together and installed it. Been working great, ever since.
The BIG difference is that everything in my car is run from relays (except for the wipers), so the current going through the switches is minimized to almost nothing. Those switches should last forever unless they mechanically wear out.
The wiper system I got from Specialty Power Windows in Texas, they make a lot of stuff for the Hot Rod guys, and everything is over-rated to commercial grade and came with a really beefy switch - no problems there, for sure - besides, this thing sees rain, what? - every five years or so?
I switch my a vw switch to a hella porsche 911 switch..10 bucks at Hershey...the original chrome 356 bezel fits perfectly.
Gordon, please start coming to Carlisle again, and I can about guarantee you can up your count on rain to at least once a year.
