I guess you'll have to follow it and see where it goes...

In other words, 'you don't know what that's for' cause I know where it goes .. it goes under the dash. duh.

Contrary to what you may believe, I'm not trying to be a smart a$$, and I'm trying to steer you in the right direction. If you're going to be successful with this car and have it for a long time, you're going to have to get to know it. These cars are all considered custom builds, with whatever part of it is VW based antique automotive technology and no 2 are alike (even from the same builder). There aren't many mechanics around that work on stuff like this, so the more you can do, the better. Ask anyone here who's had their car for a long time, and just about all do at least the basic maintenance, and there are guys in this group that have rebuilt their cars from one end to the other. If you don't make a commitment to get to know it, first time it gives you trouble and you can't find a mechanic to take care of it, it will sit in the garage. The longer it sits between drives, the sooner you'll be selling and looking for something else a little newer, and writing off what could have been a great relationship as a bad experience, and you'll be the one who misses what these cars are about.

Instead of asking a bunch of people that don't know your car about something, take the time, track where it goes and see what you can figure out. If at that point you don't know what it is, take a pic, and someone here will be able to help you. I would think it would be pretty simple to track down what it's connected to. Al

uh huh .. but now you're coming across as condescending ahole. You assumed a lot about me .. and you don't know jack-squat about me. Hope your reply made you feel all warm and fuzzy.

In the future, If you're not wanting to be perceived as an ahole; answer the specifics of the question at hand on a forum or move along.

All of this can be directly related to the fact that we're on an emotionless internet forum reading the unspoken words each of us types.

Had this conversation happened this past weekend during the 2016 SOC Cruise while sitting around the fire pit drinking the free beer provided by the hotelier it wouldn't have seemed so bad. The conversation would have been a humorous exchange of banter between friends ending with Al asking the obvious, "Have you followed the wire to see where it goes?" and you might have jokingly responded, "$hit, now why didn't I think of that?" to which you might have added, "I already did that but still couldn't tell where it went." Then we'd return to drinking beer again.

Al can pretend to think I'm 10 yrs old and he's the forum grandfather figure giving that typical generalized wisdom to someone who's not listening. Personally .. I was offended. Now here's a bunch of Al's buddies offended that I was offended. Really? Really? It's Al and you DBs who owe an apology .. not me.

Glad to see all of Al's cheerleaders showed up with nothing more than pom-poms in hand and didn't address specifics of the question either. Yall do know 'newbie' is a relative term, correct? Don't assume I'm an idiot, which is what Al did. Don't assume I've never held a wrench in my hand, which is what Al did. Don't assume I haven't build a kit or restored a few cars, which is what All did. Don't assume because I didn't graciously accept his smartass quip that I'm here for a fight. If you're in Al's corner - you did.

BTW .. thanks to everyone who responded PRIOR to Al and his girls showing up .. Yall were welcoming me to the forum, sharing my new owner experience of 356 replica, etc .. none of which Al and his girls did. Yall noticed that, right? So .. who's the ahole again?

IF anyone in the Atlanta area would like to meet up, do a cruise in, or take a group drive to the N GA mountains .. shoot me a PM/etc. Otherwise .. I'm done with Al and his group of knowitallassholejecks who treat people like they're ignorant fools.

Bali blue speedster...JPS knew of the trans noise and failed to address it. Your selling Dealer knew of it and needs to make it right...John Heckman had me drive and listen to the trans I diagnosed it as a carrier or main shafts bearing.....joufuu ALB is spot on with his post...that is not just my opinion..it's fact . This is a great group of people here...enjoy your participation herein people that flare up are gone in quick fashion. ..... Drclock

....for the old guard this is a repeat of the George thing

Boy did this take a left turn...

Well, Bill, it is the SOC...

I'll say it again, Bud; I was only trying to help. You asked a question that I really thought no one could answer (I don't think any one else here has one of those), and since the car is in your posession, you're the perfect guy to figure it out. And as I said before (I'm saying that a lot here), no 2 of these cars is built exactly the same, and that cable is a new one (to all of us, I think; someone please correct me if I'm wrong). Re-reading my first suggestion, I could have worded it differently (I was going for light hearted), I guess, but no insult/condascention (condascendingness? I don't know. English majors- help me out here!) was intended. I was thinking, "we can't solve this over the internet; get off your butt and look, since it's in your garage"...

At your suggestion I went back and re-read your first posts; I see a car enthusiast that's owned some different cars. I'm guessing you've never owned a Beetle or old Porsche; these cars are a little different (as well as being truly archaic automotive technology) and there aren't many mechanics around these days that have worked on an old bug or 356. I know your car is Subie powered, but a lot of the suspension is still rooted in the 1930's.

My response is the same- follow the cable; what's it connected to?

Stan describes what this forum is about pretty succintly (I'm not sure that's the right word for what I'm thinking, but I've been wanting to use it for a while, so here it is!), as Stan so often does (I love what you write Stan; don't stop!). Most of us are on a first name basis here, and there's a reason for that; this is not just a forum about cars. I feel like I know quite a number of these guys fairly well (and am looking forward to meeting everybody at one of the get togethers one day should I ever be able to arrange my attendance), and people here have done all sorts of things for guys they've never actually met (one nutball even crossed an international border to look at a car for a new member).

My point is, this may not be exactly the type of car forum you're used to. If you take the time to get to know some of us, you may like it here. If you don't, I get that too. Al

Bud- Just read your post above. Again, I'm sorry you're all butt-hurt, but I won't miss you. You really don't get it...

Wow!

Relax please JOFUU. Is there the slightest chance that you might be over reacting a bit? Robert M's point that we lose context on these forums because we can't see faces, hear voices or catch inflections or subtleties of communication is on point.

What does come across clearly is name calling and direct insults, and you own those two in this exchange.

I can't speak for Al, but in several years on this forum I don't recall him putting anybody down or being anything but helpful. He doesn't need any of us to defend him, and I don't own any pom poms.

You are an unknown entity here. Nobody really knows your background, skill level or wrenching capabilities, but nobody challenged them either. Maybe the benefit of the doubt regarding Al's intent might be worth considering.

What has become apparent is that, in this case, around people you have no prior relationship with you decided to attack. What has that gotten you that is positive?

Getting the last word doesn't translate to winning an argument or, having a valid complaint in the first place. It just means not letting it pass.

Good luck with the car.

We used to have a popcorn emoji on here that I'd use when things were getting all dramatic.

I get busy at the office, ignore the site for a month or so, and a damn Trump rally breaks out over a light hearted comment?!

Let's turn this negative into a positive. Let's guess what it's for. My guess? Heater control.

A lot of good info and ideas are exchanged here. Al really was just trying to help. I think Stan said it best with the "best to put the shovel down" comment.

I would create a new account and say that you just bought the car from a forum member here named JOUFUU and start over!

But before you go re-read what is below, take a moment to reflect, then apologize to everyone here.

"I'm done with Al and his group of knowitallassholejecks who treat people like they're ignorant fools."

Rusty, the guy called everyone here a cheerleader, girl and some other names as well. What are we in Preschool? Too bad as us with Coupes are the minority in this forum. Hope he can press the reset button and clear the air.

As for me, if by supporting Al or anyone else in this forum that welcomed my naiive newbie self almost a year ago, and put up with all my ignorant questions with nothing but friendly and helpful answers, you got offended, it was not the intent. But I don't take insults or disrespect of me or of anyone in front of me even if on cyberspace.

So, good luck with the car and hope you can turn it around. You're going to need this forum if you intend to keep it for long. That's all I can say. Unfollowing this thread now and making a right.

Hey, this one's gettin' fun!

This is bad; i just can't stay away! Go to work, Al, go to work!

And one more thing (I'm really on a roll here)- Nobody answered earlier- condascention(sp) or condascendingness? I really have to know. And did I use succinctly correctly while praising Stan's prose? I also really have to know...

Thanks again to the late comers for welcoming me to the forum! You guys are some of the best keyboard badasses and forum ambassadors I've even seen!

Ron O .. ever think the problem with all these recent newbies lies within yall?

Yall have a blessed day. Especially you Alan .. biggest douche ever. Fact.

JouFuu, You seem to be wound up a little to tight. Life is to short to let the little things (like words) offend you...I don't know Al but he's always chimed in to help me with my car as many others have and that's what you get hear, help.

Ask a stupid question and sometimes you don't get the answer you want. No two of these cars are alike.

Anyway, what does the other end attach to?

And if Julio B shows up it'll be Me and Julio Down by the School Yard

Holy Carp!

I take a morning off from Biking to install a steering coupler and miss the $#!+ storm of the decade!

Well, I gave up on keyboard flaming somewhere around 1980 when I realized no one ever wins - especially the people who think they've won.

Like a bunch of others on here, BLOCKED is a 7-letter word and only the third time I've used it on here, but this guy is perfect for it.  Absolutely the shortest time before blocking of anyone I can remember.

Jethro:

Please provide a list of what things offend you. We will form a committee, assess the options and assign the responsibility for posting an appropriately offensive comment to one of the members.

If you could rank the the things that offend you in descending order, it would be helpful in guiding us to make the first attempt the most offensive.

We look forward to pissing you off!
