Terry (or anyone else),

Do you know if these seats are different from the "speedster" seats that Vintage uses? i tried a pair of those once before and there were 2 problems:

1. they bowed and flexed side to side
2. they were too narrow in the back/ the side bolsters were too aggressive; cramped my back after an hour of driving.

I was going to order some jps seats in hoping that they got them from a different provider than kirk. any input would really be helpful.

thanks,
george
George,
I'm not positive but I think John uses the same speedster seats as Kirk.
They are made of fiberglass and will distort if much pressure is exerted. If you are on the bigger side of 180 lbs., You'll probably find them a bit flexible. For a couple grand you can get a set made out of aluminum.
The seats aren't for everybody. You might want to check in with Henry at Intermeccanica. Perhaps they're a bit more rigid.
I wouldn't do the tuck and roll again because it isn't period correct and it just looks a bit too Tijuana.
Henry uses a 2 piece mold for his seat- they are really rigid. On most of them, the seat cushions ride a bit higher than the JPS/Vintage shell, but mine were cut way down in the base to drop me down further in the car (as was my request).

Fibersteel makes a metal shell, and I think he even makes one that is a bit wider than stock, although I'm not sure if it will fit in a pan-based replica. Then there's the money.... they are really expensive.

Good luck.
Terry -

Since you don't like the tuck-n-roll seats for it's Tijuana flavor, then my hunch is you probably won't like my Speedy's 'purple velour' dashboard or the 'Aztec Warrior' air-brushed on my hood, let alone my 'Thee Majestics' plaque on my rear deck or my chrome-chain steering wheel.

But don't EVEN think about dissing my Speedy's 100-spoke gold Dayton wheels or my low-rider hydraulics!!! LOL
I have JPS seats because everything else is JPS too. I got the rolled and pleated covering option, as this gives extra padding and looks good, to my eyes. I think I'd like the seats a little better if they tilted back just a scosh (?) to give thigh support at a little different angle, but overall they look great and are comfortable enough. This car ain't a Lexus, after all. I will confess I have never noticed or been bothered by flexure. Maybe it is there, and I just don't know any better. I'm 6' and around 200 lbs. "Spirited" is what it's all about, so I've been there and done that plenty w/ these seats.

I notice a lot of folks using Miata seats, or other equipment that offers more padding, head restraints, etc. I will confess to having thought about how that might play. Seems that for long trips, a better seat w/ more thigh support would help. Maybe if I get into multi day trips and lots of miles, I'd consider a second set of seats. Or if somehow I get older, and think I might want more comfort. For now, the quasi-original look (originals had nothing like the rolled and pleated) suits me fine.
