Interior is going to be a medium tan leather with grey carpet. Pleated seats. Sort of like the one i've attached.

Wheels will be the nipple hubcaps.

Wood steering wheel and shifter. Standard bumpers. No fog lights. No luggage rack.

Haven't decided on top color yet... I really love the blue speedsters but haven't found a color combination for the top that i love so much.  Any suggestions?

Other than that, it's a pretty standard JPS Suby build. Heat / AC.. heated seats for the wife. Hiding the stereo b/c i don't want some Kenwood head unit hanging under the dash.

Dash will be the same tan leather as the seats...  Just don't know if i can get a top in the same tan.. and i don't want to get one that's close but not close enough.. ya know? Anyhow.. We'll cross that bridge in a few weeks i suppose.

It's not a turbo but still puts out 170hp in 1600 pounds... plenty fast for me.

Devin, first of all congratulations on what seems to be shaping up as a super car.  I can imagine how anxious you must be sitting a "twiddling".  A couple of observations, if you don't mind.  Your gray carpets with a medium tan color for seats and dash seems like a clash to me, JMHO.  Also, 1600# for a suby-powered car sounds a little light.  Maybe you should have it weighed.  In any event, I understand how excited you are.

Admittedly, the weight was an estimate. You're probably right about the Suby engine being heavier... I've driven a few of this exact setup and can tell you the 170hp is plenty for what i'm looking for.

As for the tan / grey.. appreciate the thoughts. I've seen in a bunch of cars (like the one i posted above) and think it looks sharp if its the right tan.. I think the darker tans (almost brown) work better. Here's another pic that i've used as my guiding light...

Hey Devin,

All I can say is... Its going to be a sweet ride!

Your opinion is the only one that matters Its your a$$ that gets to sit in the drivers seat.. Pink and green.. Whatever, its your baby... Enjoy the process..  Its not every day you get to order a car to your specs!

Please post more pics as available.. I'll do my best to hide the jealousy!

We could start a raffle: Guess the Weight. I'm going with 1895 with you in it.  Go to a truck scale, and have it weighed when you are all done.  1600 is way light, and 2,000 seems a bit much.  Great color, and looks like JPS is still long on paint quality.  I have one of John's Speedsters (Type 1, air cooled) and get + comments on the paint all the time. And I know about the heebie-jeebies while the build moves fwd.  And also the hand wringing about colors.  I think you could get a dark blue top and tonneau that might contrast/work w/ the body color OK.  Or black, I guess.  Black goes with everything.

Oh, and WTM.

Weight...really curious on this. Carey is going to do a before & after weight on my Beck this winter:

Coming out:

- 2054 CB AC engine
- External oil cooler
- Breather box
- Full sized spare
- A1 Sidewinder w/heater boxes
- Aux heater fan

Going in:

- 2.5L Suby
- Radiator, plumbing, & coolant
- Heater core & controls
- ECU & wiring
- Custom exhaust (I'm thinking lighter)
- 2nd Fuel tank (for spirited driving :-))
- Turn signal mirrors

Of course, Beck tube frames are the lightest to begin with.

Thanks Greg.. I should introduce you to my wife sometime...  (admittedly, she does have better style than I do...). All colors / textiles are wife approved. Engine is all my doing.

I agree with Greg, Devin, you are the dude who has to be pleased with the final result.  I would go with a brown carpet and a dark brown top, but the thing is, about taste, there is no dispute.  I promise you, if you like it so will we.  My original thought for my car was a dark blue (probably Bali) with a saddle interior light brown top.  But then I saw Charles' IM with red paint and black interior.  I was hooked on what looked right to me and I was pleased with the result.  BTW, the sweet bride said "It has to be red".

My guess for weight is 2015#, half tank of gas, no driver and ready to go.

I couldn't agree more, Happy Wife equals Happy Life.. I'm fortunate that she tolerates my hobbies (Guitars & Cars). I stay out of her way when it comes to the house. Except when it comes to the man cave

I'm sticking with 1950 pounds for Devin's car, but that's with 1/2-ish tank of gas, nobody in the seats, a can of fix-a-flat (no spare wheel), no trash under the seats, no dead body in the trunk, all of the usual creature comforts (radio, heat, one package of beef jerky, no LeHigh beer), no lawn chair or full cooler under the tonneau, 185 tires, no cup holders or drinks to put in them and the top down (everyone knows the car is heavier with the top UP, right??)

OK Devin, Gordon has decided 'no spare wheel' for our calculations.

But you'll have to decide if we're to factor in a quarter, or a half full tank of fuel.

Once, to make weight, in a Soap Box Derby competition I had to shed the coins in my pocket, my belt, and wrist watch...fortunately I barely squeak by... for the only alternatives left was defecation, urination, and if need be, throwing up my breakfast!

I don't know Devin, but his picture makes him look young. I'm not guessing his weight, but I'll guess on the car.

It's going to weight north of a ton without him in it, and with a half tank of gas. Spare/no-spare, what ever- north of 2000 lbs. With him in it, and all of the attendant accoutrements- it'll tip out at over 2250, I'd guess.

Let's go with...

  • 1/2 tank of gas
  • no spare
  • top down (I'm not sure about weight, but i know convertibles drive faster with the top down so i assume that means they're lighter too)
  • Fully charged battery
  • No Devin or Devin's wife
  • 1 iPhone chargine cable
  • Traditional badging
  • No Foglights
  • 1 Pair Fuzzy dice, orange

I can feel the shitstorm coming for this, but i'm going to go with my birth year, 1980 pounds.
