Looking to find out what compact spare would fit my wife's (Mom's356) 1970 subframe VW 4 lug wheel. Needs to be able to fit into the trunk of a CMC kit. Trying to keep it as modern/ecomonical as possible.

Brian,
I can't help you by suggesting the junkyard models to look for, but just be aware that the pattern measurement for the rim that you reguire is a 4x130 (4=bolt holes x 130mm measured from the center of the holes equilaterally across the hub)
I'm not sure if different dimensions exist for 4 bolt patterns BUT, ask me how I know of variations in 5 BOLT PATTERNS!!
...better safe than dragging home a boat anchor.
my $0.02:
keep a stock vw skinny rim. get a space saver tire from a honda civic, or pretty much anything in a junk yard (in the size range of 120-70-15). obviously make sure its a 15"
grab the jack too - while you are in there and mount the tire on the skinny (4" wide) rim.
^^^^What Mango said^^^^ A stock VW 4 bolt wheel will work best. If the car has different lug nuts remember to have some for the spare.
Exactly; that's what I did; got a 4.5" wide VW wheel and switched the compact spare to that rim. Even compact spares as found on certain GM models work.
Build manual says T125/70x15" on a 4.5" rim. OEM VW 4" rims are available too.
I called a local junkyard and they told me to make a template of my bolt pattern and come on down because they had at least 50 compact spares. I went through every one and none matched but I bought one off a Buick Centuary because it had an unused perfect tire. I had to drill new holes with a one half inch drill. It was time consuming-better to go the vw wheel route. My wheel fits nicely in the front of my 2006 Vintage with storage space underneath.

Neat solution Joel!
I remember someone (perhaps Paul Cormie) stating that he carries a heavyduty garbage bag to transport the airless 'dead' tire in....Good thinking
Nahhh, that was Tony Soprano.
Or maybe it was the "boys from Atwells Avenue in Providence"??
