I think we need to really use a venue for a nationwide get together such as Run and Gun, or maybe Sturgis. You have a lot going for you if someone else is doing the basics, but regardless it may be tough to get either of the main coastal contingents to drive that far. But hey its worth a try and we should at least have a nice midwest contingent?

October?? The spring is already taken up by Knotts and Carlisle, but maybe they know something I don't about the time of the year to get people to go to these type of things?
We have discussed a couple of spring meeting for the Midwest. One in the north (Iowa, Wisconsin?) and one in the south (Missouri or Arkansas). There are several shows to plan around in the spring.

Knott's Apr 22-24
Carlisle may 20-24
Funfest June 4-5

Anyone have any others that should be taken into account?

I was planning to try to get together with folks the first part of May but the Carlisle show will probably change that for some. Any ideas?

As far as a coast to coast venue, The Real Source puts on a big deal every summer (June 4&5 2005) for VWs and then one later for Porches. The VW event generally attracts 700-900 cars. This might be a good spot. It is in Effingham Il.

I would definitely back an autumn time if spring is too crowded. It's pretty hard to beat the glacial parts of the Midwest for fall colors. I'll be monitoring this thread throughout the loooong midwest dormancy period for updates and do a little research for good dates coinciding with auto related stuff.
Good point Paul, and I suspect that the host would be glad to see the replica cars. As somebody posted a while back, the "real" Porsche guys should be more open and welcoming since our existance increases the demand for some of the parts that they too need. To my simple brain, couldn't that translate into better availability and more reasonable prices for those items? If not, I guess I'll reach for a Pollyanna hat instead of the Hoss hat.

Just looked at their web site and it appears that June 11th and 12th are the dates for 05. I think that is also the date for the Parts Obsolete Campout in McMinnville, Or, so guess I won't be at the Mid America show! Darn it, you wait all winter for neat places to visit and a lot of times they are on the same dates, grrr! It seems like the Mid America V W show is later, maybe August, so that may work for me!

Hey guys, I think it needs to be in the Fall... we already have April and May covered and we all will need some down time after making mega trips. That's just an opinion. Plus cool weather is cool for our Speedy's engines. Tweeks is cool... I do think they have a Fall Swap Meet.

Ben?

We should look for a German Auto Show, a VW show, AN OCTOBERFEST!!!, or something like that.

I happened to surf into an event site..... There is a VW AND Porsche show (yes) at the old prison they shot Shawshank (sp?) Redemption at. There is a festival going with the show, and tours of the movie set, etc. I don't know about the location... maybe Ohio? I'll look it up again and look. It is in late summer or early Fall. Details coming.

The St. Louis area (historic towns) always has great Octoberfests and the roads are wonderful.... That might be a good central location to start with??!

See, Octoberfest is German, there's beer, and it's in the Fall. I'll betcha we can find a car event to go with it!!!

I also think we need to organize two or three regional clubs here... and take turns hosting a Fall event! Jim

JIm, I liked your original Octoberfest idea. It would be a lot easier on the VW engines and is also a dry month in the midwest. Both of these weather related issues and the issue of having some down time would make october really nice. Lets keep looking for something on Late September and October and maybe in the Mississipi area somewhere, but I think finding an event that we can focus around in that time and in that area would be ideal.
