Just arrived Project #40!

Gathering chassis parts:

4 wheel disc brakes, larger master cylinder, 2 lb valve, Kafer bar, sway bar, front beam to chassis brace,  steering damper and mild gas shocks ( not going with a trans  strap = vibration transfer) .........Anything else ?

How about a Hydro-Vac, tucked in front of the passenger bulkhead?  You, too, could have 4-wheel power disk brakes like Simon Hambly.

Don't forget a fire suppression system.

Which Kafer bar are you using?  I found my cross-bar was semi-adjustable (the downlink tabs interfered with the rear seat tub so you can't turn it once installed) so I assembled it 1/4"-3/8" tight and then pulled everything together with the upper shock bolts, deflecting the shock towers about 1/8" in.

.........Making my own front beam to chassis braces over the counter at $250 is a bit pricey for something that can be made in a 60 ton press, ( case of beer donation) drill four holes and fabricate horseshoe braces.

The 4 wheel discs, HD damper, Kafer bar, weld in adjustable shift coupler, big master cylinder, decent shocks & floor sound deadening should put me in the right direction, I hope to begin this around the 1st of the new year.

When I read that, Ed, I thought " who the h*ll sells them for that much?". I looked it up on the Canadian California Imports site and they're $398.99 in Canadian dollars. I just about crapped myself...

I've seen costly CSP ones (nice work but $$$) and the EMPI $32 (rough but do the job) --- C26-413-151 - LOWER FRONT END SUPPORT TUBES W/CAPS PAIR

Are these what you are referring to as beam braces?  Empi has upper one too but think they mount to OEM metal that isn't there on a Speedster.

Yeah, David, but they're not a couple of tubes with one end flattened and a couple of holes drilled.

And yes, Greg, those are beam braces. I've never seen (or even heard of, for that matter) ones for the upper tubes.

Here's the upper ones by EMPI.  CIP has them too.

The engineer in me is wondering how those actually work.  The natural movement (limited though it may be) of the beam would just make the tubes tend to flex with the beam motion (or break off the weld at the base farthest from the beam) because the end points of the tube are at 90 degrees (??)

I wonder if it might be a lot more effective to have a single brace, welded to a piece of 2" X 8" X 1/4" angle stock mounted in the middle of the two beams (vertically) and bolted to the two pan/frame corner bolts?  You could mate it to the beam tubes with Urethane or rubber spacers of the same shape.

Some things happen for reasons unknown to us, " Chris" local here in Pa. was interested in a red Speedster I recently sold, I mentioned that I have done custom builds in the past. Chris was here today,  we did a wish - build list and deposit.             So project  # 40 will be a custom build and ready for Chris at Carlisle.  My build, will wait patiently until summer.

I just spent over 4 hours cursing up a storm replacing a worn outer IRS   axle bearing, I would re-stack everything back in the housing with globs of grease up to my elbow, and it would be 1/16" too long...Take it apart recheck , measure and repeat a good number of times....  8#@!                                                                                                          I ended up walking away from it. Later, I removed the snap ring for the inboard bearing, remove that bearing  and found a single roller bearing had dislodged and turned 90 degrees on that bearing hence the 1/16" .....

Just so you know- a rum punch (rum, coke and orange juice) also makes a great way to start the day. It has all the essentials- vitamin A, C,and caffeine. And remember- drinking rum before noon doesn't make you an alcoholic, it makes you a pirate! All this breakfast talk; too bad I have work to do today...

Finished the totally refurbished disc brake chassis build today, rolled that to the side rolling the body into the shop this evening......This speedster will be " delivered " Saturday afternoon at Carlisle to it's new owner ~
